Chapter 9 SOMEHOW, I BEAT NIGEL TO the hospital. Sadie is fussing over Malcolm. His bed has precise hospital corners. She’s arranged all the items on his tray table. His nightstand is spotless, and in its drawer a dozen snacks are hiding for later. She is now rearranging all the flowers everyone has sent. When she sees me, her eyes widen. “Oh, Katy! You’re soaked through. Here, let’s get you dry.” She takes me by the shoulders and directs me toward the room’s radiator. I cast a glance back at Malcolm. “Oh, thank God,” he murmurs. “She has another patient.” I can’t help but laugh.
