I only allow him enough time to settle into his seat before I frown at him, receiving a confused look from him in return. “How did you get the bruise?”
His eyes light up with understanding and his face relaxes, realizing my frown wasn’t over something he’d done or over something too serious. “I just bumped into something, I guess. I didn’t know anything happened until I saw it there.” He sees the concern on my face remains instead of dissipating as expected. “It’s just a bruise. They happen.
