Josh had refused to tell Emily where he’d gone the three days he’d been away, but since his return, they’d managed to agree on a tentative truce. Josh went to school—and stayed there—and Emily didn’t ask too many prying questions. As long as he wasn’t skipping and wasn’t hanging out with his former friends, Emily was satisfied. She wished, though, that she could get Josh to open up, as she knew he was unhappy. She saw it in the lines of strain on his young face, the way he got up in the middle of the night to sit in the living room because he couldn’t sleep.
