“You can’t throw Nico and Jessica out, can you?”
Her question struck me like a blow. I knew she wasn’t just asking about them—she was asking if I could truly protect her. She was seeking reassurance.
“I—”
“Yes or no, Xavier?” she demanded, her voice rising, each word laced with pain that cut through me like a knife.
I hesitated, my mind racing for the right response. “If what Emily said is true, then I need to speak to my father—”
Before I could finish, she shoved me away, frustration spilling over.
“Unbelievable!” she muttered, reaching for the door handle.
