Michael Reese. “Mom, I don’t think. . .” The woman gave Jonathan a side glare, beaming at me still as she said. “You can take it. It’s yours, dear.” I could hear my thudding heart howling in my ears. I felt as if the air around me got sucked out, leaving me suffocating the more I stared at it. I could feel the sweat that coated my forehead and drenched my shirt from the back. I was scared. . . terrified even. I wasn’t sure if the idea of not feeling a thing when I’d touch it was what scared me, or if it was the memory of that fateful day when Hayden aimed to kill me with it that did. I just didn’t want to touch it. I flinched back when I felt a cold hand on my shoulder, and it pained me to see the grim expression Hayden has sported as he reached for me.
