Chapter 36After Dr. Lehrman left us in the clinic’s lobby, I
found Helga and asked her to take Katharina to the children’s
building on the pretext that she wanted to see how the clinic cared
for children. We agreed that the farmer’s son, and I would meet her
in front of that building with the horses.
The only problem was Katharina’s clothes.
She had in fact packed a riding habit in her large steamer trunk.
However, the railroad was taking that with our other checked
luggage to Frankfurt. Therefore, it did us little good now, and
Katharina couldn’t ride some thirty miles on a horse wearing one of
her Gibson Girl outfits.
We solved that problem when I returned to
the farm to arrange for the horses and the farmer’s son, Ewald, to
guide us.
