I walked out of the meeting because I couldn’t stand the way the elders were talking about my mother and the way they were just accusing her of abandoning my father. It was almost as if they didn’t know what she was going through with him behind closed doors, but I knew they did. She told me that she had reported the way my father was treating her to the elders and they chose not to take her seriously. They chose to not listen to her because she was a woman.
