I didn’t even realize how long I’d been staring at my phone, eyes glassing over, until Nathan’s voice broke through the fog.
“Adele!”
I blinked, my gaze dragging up to meet his. My eyes must’ve given it away. Wet and unfocused.
“Have you even heard a word I said?” he asked, then stopped short. His expression softened as he tilted his head slightly. One hand brushed against my cheek, the other lifting my chin so I had no choice but to look at him.
“Wait... Are you crying?” he murmured. “Hey, it’s okay. If you don’t wanna go, we can—”
“I’m next,” I cut in, my voice barely above a whisper.
