I straightened up instantly, taking a few steps away from Nathan.

Before I could even part my lips to explain, Nathan beat me to it.
He slipped an arm around my waist, pulling me close like we were in sync, then cleared his throat.
“Welcome, Dad. Thanks for showing up,” he said, flashing a small and almost smug smile. I watched as Cole returned the smile, but it was so fake, it practically screamed war.
Nathan didn’t stop there.
“So, any thoughts on how we should handle her mom’s abduction?”
