THE FIRST time Sophie noticed the car behind her, she assumed it was a coincidence. By the third traffic light, she wasn't so sure. She glanced into the rearview mirror while waiting at an intersection near downtown. A dark sedan sat two vehicles behind her. Nothing about it seemed unusual at first glance. The windows were tinted, and the driver remained impossible to identify. When the light turned green, Sophie changed lanes. The sedan changed lanes too. A knot formed in her stomach. She told herself she was being paranoid. The investigation had consumed her life for weeks.
