"Giving up so easily? I thought you were here to fight and stay?" He called out to me. I froze.
"I'm not giving up. We had a deal and I don't go back on my word. My promises mean something."
"Yes, we had a deal. You said If I don't like it, I could fire you on the spot."
"I'm well aware of what I said." I bit out. I was bitter, yes, and maybe acting a bit childish, but he brought that out in me. "I-"
"I never said I didn't like it. If you were paying attention, you'd notice the cup was empty. I don't finish something if I don't like it." He said.
My eyes searched his, looking for the sincerity in his words. He licked his lips, tasting the lingering drop of coffee that had settled on his lips.
“Get to work, Mrs Akers. We have a busy day ahead of us.”
I tried to focus throughout the day. I tried to complete every task and demand Levi had given me. But my eyes strayed towards his office without my own permission. I watched the way he relaxed in his chair as he spoke with clients. I watched the way his jaw tensed and flexed as he was stressed or angry about an outcome he didn't agree with.
Why did a man with such a complicated and troubling past have to be so damned beautiful? Even when he was angry he was striking to look at.
There were times I looked at Derek and thought he was a good-looking man, but that was foolish and naive of me.
Where Derek was attractive, Levi was masculine, handsome, and jaw-dropping exquisite.
I sighed while shaking my head. I hated the man. Lie. All lies. Why was I admiring him? Why was I practically drooling on my computer and keyboard about how dreamy he was?
I went to rub my eyes before I groaned. Makeup. I pinched the bridge of my nose while taking a deep breath to clear my thoughts. My desk phone rang and I frowned when it came up as an unknown caller.
"Saunders and Jones. You've reached the desk of Levi Saunders. How may I help you?"
There was silence on the other end. I pulled the phone away from my ear and checked the caller ID to make sure they hadn't disconnected. When the line was still open I repeated myself. Once, twice. When I was about to speak for a third time there was a feminine scoff on the other line.
"He's already moving along, isn't he?" The woman muttered.
"Excuse me?" I retorted, unsure if that was meant for me or what this woman wanted.
"Let me speak to him," she demanded.
"I can certainly take a message and have Mr. Saunders call you back. May I ask who's calling?"
"Oh, don't act all high and mighty just because you were given a title and a desk. I said let me speak to Levi. Now!" She growled and I rolled my eyes.
Scorned lover it is. It seems Levi has a habit of attracting the desperate and clingy ones.
"I'm sorry. Mr. Saunders is in a meeting with a client. I can take a message and have him call you back but I cannot get him on the line right now."
"Ugh, fine."
"Can I get your name?" I asked hoping to get her to hurry up and give me her message so I could get off of this dreadful call and get back to work.
It seemed this was just the wake up call I needed to stop fantasizing about the mans looks and remember who exactly he is.
"It's Rachel. And tell him he needs to call me back immediately."
Fucking hell. Rachel? The evil b***h queen b from high school? They were still in contact? We're they still dating after all these years? I hadn't seen any photos of them together in his office, and she hadn't once called before this.
"Is this the best number to reach you at?" I asked painstakingly, and she shrieked.
"Of course it is! My number should be programmed and be listed as a priority. I am his....ugh, you must be new. I swear to god, it's always the dumb broads they hire. Just give him my message and have him call me immediately, or you won't like what happens next!" She hung up the phone before I could respond.
I jotted her message down on a sticky note along with her number and the time of the call. My heels clicked on the floor as I walked towards Levis' office and knocked two times to announce my arrival. There was a muffled come in, granting me permission to enter.
Levi was sitting at his desk with his headset on. His legs were propped up on his desk as he completed a phone appointment with a client and soon to be ex-spouse and their attorneys.
"Yeah, we can either agree to the terms laid out or we can proceed with a court date. Mrs Jennings has been quite forgiving and gracious in the amount she's asked for in the settlement and divorce. Your client walks away with control of their shared business. Gets to keep their house in Cabo and his three mistresses. All my client is asking for is a well deserved spousal support payment monthly or a lump sum of the money she is owed and the house and custody of their children. If your client wants to argue this, we can drag this out which means every messy skeleton in his closet will be brought to life. I don't think his other mistresses will be to pleased to hear about each other. Not to mention that one of them is actually a man. The ball is in your court." Levi said.
He was commanding, lethal, and every bit of the Alpha people thought he was. He was cutthroat for his clients and willing to do the dirty work needed to get them everything they were owed and want.
Levi's eyes met mine as he spoke and waited for the reply of the group on the other end of the call. I silently made my way to his desk and placed the sticky note down with a bit of force before tapping it with my fingers.
He sat up straight and his brow furrowed as he read my message. He looked from me to the note before going to respond, but I had already started walking away.
I was his assistant. Not his messenger owl to him and his many lovers. He could handle calling his woman back and fixing what was clearly upsetting her all on his own. That wasn't my job nor was it in my contract and job description.
"I'm pleased to hear you've had a change of heart, Mr Jennings. I will be on the look out for the signed contract and divorce decree so we can finish the process." He said as I shut the door to his office and tried so hard to forget every single positive thing I had been thinking of him.
