Levi
"Christina, a moment, please," I bit out.
I didn't know how to describe what I was feeling. I was angry. I was excited. I was curious. I was f*****g furious. What was she doing here? Clearly, she was the new hire. Did Christina not recognize her? She never knew her because of our age difference, but she obviously heard me talking about 'the omega' growing up. Did she not put two and two together? Or, did she know exactly who Shayna was and was this her way of getting back at me for running off the last secretary?
"Excuse us for just a moment." My sister said softly to Shayna while placing her hand gently on her arm.
I noticed Shayna tense up at the contact and my brow furrowed, trying to understand every little detail about her. Now that I thought about it, Patrick had said she looked worse for wear, but looking at her now, she looked put-together, presentable, and absolutely stunning. I hadn't taken more than a few moments to glance at her but I knew it was Shayna. She may have grown up, but those eyes haven't changed.
I marched towards my office and waited for my sister to cross the threshold before shutting the door and hitting the button on the wall to turn the clear windows opaque. She leaned against my desk and crossed her arms over her chest and glared at me.
"You are trying to make my life and job so much harder than it needs to be, Levi. You've been through five assistants in 3 years. The last one barely made it out of her probationary period. It's Shaynas first day, and you very well might have already ruined this one." She chastised.
"First of all, did you even think about this before hiring her?" I asked, when she tilted her head to the side, trying to comprehend what I was asking I sighed.
"What designation is she? She's an omega. An omega in an office full of Alphas and a handful of betas. She will send every single one of them into a frenzy. She will disrupt everything. She could get hurt. Imagine if she went into heat while in the office, and it sent an alpha with less control into a rut."
She scoffed. "As if we don't have policies in place for that. For one, we can't just not hire her simply because she is an omega. There are laws against that big brother. I would think a hot shot lawyer such as yourself would know that."
I did know that, but it still didn't make this any easier.
"Secondly, she is on suppressants. When I asked her if she was willing to work with alphas and headstrong betas, she voluntarily offered up that information, which helped me in my decision to hire her. I am good at my job, Levi, and you have to let me prove that. You hired me for a reason. I know exactly who she is, and she deserves a chance just like everyone else. She is capable, and she passed all the requirements and tests in the interviews. She is nice and willing to put up with you which is already a win in my book. Fire her if you want, but it will be your responsibility to hire someone else and manage your tasks in the meantime."
"You hired her as payback. Didn't you?" I asked, finally getting to the point.
"You'll never know. I heard the rumors growing up, and she hasn't given me one inclination that she is any of the things you and your group of lackeys used to call her. I know you've changed big brother, but that was seriously f****d up. What if someone had treated me the way you treated her? You would have killed them. But who knows, she may end up being the best thing that ever happened to Saunders and Jones. You wont know that unless you give her a chance."
She walked towards the door and paused when she gripped the handle before turning back to look at me. She had a thoughtful expression on her face. Every word she spoke hit me in the gut like a knife. I knew I had f****d up back in high school with how I treated Shayna and I had no idea that Christina knew about it all. But, just thinking of someone treating my baby sister the way that I treated Shayna makes me feel like I have rocks sitting in the pit of my stomach and makes my wolf nearly feral.
She takes a big breath in before speaking again. "She is a really nice person. I like her, and I don't want you to mess this up. I want to be her friend, so please just think about it."
She's out the door, and I hear her whisper a few words towards Shayna. I turn off the privacy windows and the view of them both comes into focus. Shayna is sitting at her desk and has her computer open and logged in and a stack of papers neatly piled up on one side of her desk, a notebook open and from what I can see an email tab and calendar tab open on the computer. Christina lifts her head to look at me with a raised brow and a smirk. She mouths an 'I told you so' before stalking towards the elevators.
I had already made my decision to let her stay for a trial run, but seeing how she hadn't even been here for a few hours and was already getting to work without me having to ask wasn't helping my ego. I had no doubt she had heard at least some of that conversation, so now I was walking to her, the girl I used to bully, like a pup with his tail between his legs, to apologize.
"Sorry about."
"I've placed an order at the local cafe. I will be picking it up in fifteen minutes. I took a look at your calendar and it is an absolute mess. It will take me some time to organize it. I will need you to let me know either in email or writing what is non negotiable and what can be pushed to a more feasible date. I will scan in these documents and add them to your files. Is there anything else that needs my immediate attention Mr. Saunders?" She interrupted.
I paused, a little taken back by the bite in her tone and the coldness of her words. Now that I looked at her, truly looked at her, she had a look in her eyes that matched her words. She looked haunted even, but no less beautiful. Her hair was longer than I remembered, and she had a delicateness about her face that made me want to treat her like a porcelain doll. She hadn't gotten any taller since high school but the curves she developed had my mouth watering. Her skin was fair and dusted with freckles and more makeup than I've ever seen her wear before. Almost like she was hiding behind it. She hadn't gotten any a confidence about her but was betrayed by the way she was fidgeting with her fingers. She was twirling them around her ring finger on her left hand, which was absent a ring but held a tan line there like it hadn't been long since she had taken it off. I made a mental note to ask about that later.
"No. I, that's great, actually. But how do you know how I take my coffee?" I asked, probing to see her answer.
"It's not hard to guess. You are an alpha, so you want something manly and strong, but I remember how in high school you loved eating anything sweet. You crashed the bake sales more times than I can remember. But you needed something that also has enough kick to get you through the day and judging by the bags under your eyes, you haven't had nearly enough caffeine today. I am good at reading people and you are one of the easier ones."
"If I'm so easy to read, then what did you order?"
"Maple Latte with two shots of espresso and one cream. Try it. If you don't like it, you can fire me, and you will never have to see me again."
