HANNAH I paced my breathing and counted my steps under my breath to distract myself from what was going on. I just wanted to be in my head all the time, if that was possible. I wanted my mind to dissociated from what my body was being forced to do. But it was hard to find my happy place when Asher stopped walking and turned to growl at me. "Hey, walk faster, will you? What the hell is wrong with you anyway?" He eyed the pile of books I was carrying. "You had better not let any of those books touch the floor or you'll be picking them up with your teeth." I nodded, taking great care that my eyes remained downcast. That seemed to please him. He was always pleased whenever I didn't put up a protest to whatever outrageous demands he made.
