Becca ~ “You really think you won?” Lydia’s voice slides into my ear before I even see her. I don’t jump. I don’t flinch. I don’t give her the satisfaction. We’re at another one of Mrs Hale’s dinner parties. Too many diamonds. Too much fake laughter. Everyone pretending they don’t check gossip blogs in the bathroom. I turn slowly, wine glass balanced between my fingers. Lydia looks perfect. Tight red dress. Hair slick. Smile sharp enough to cut someone open. But her eyes? Unhinged. “I didn’t realise this was a competition,” I say lightly. She steps closer. Too close. Her perfume is aggressive. Sweet and suffocating. “Oh, it is,” she whispers. “You just don’t know the rules.” Cute. “For the last time I’m not interested in Stephen,” I reply calmly. “You can relax.” She laughs
