Lions in Egypt.
The lion held a privileged status in ancient Egypt, regarded as the fiercest warrior in the wild and a symbol of both danger and protection. The lion mummies may be associated with the worship of Bastet, the Egyptian warrior goddess with the face of a Lion.
Lions usually lived on the edges of the desert, and so they became known as the guardians of the eastern and western horizons, where the sun rose and set. Hence, in the hieroglyph for Horizon (akhet), they sometimes replaced the eastern and western mountains symbols.
The big cats were relatively rare in Egypt and it certainly did not help
