Chapter 8

Dion entered the premises and it showed. Every person in the building got on their toes. It was jitters and nerves. And perhaps fear. The big ITSU, that took up the largest land of Johannesburg. It was the first branch that Bowman built. He had extended it many times and renovated it many times to finally be as worthy for nominations as one of the land-markers of the town. “He’s back!” cries had begun. “What’s he doing here?” “Oh, no. What if he’s been told that I came in late five times last week? I am sacked!” “What if he knows that Brian and Zack had a fight again?” “What’s he doing here!” It was panic. As he walked through, they made way for him. They sat at their desks and each one as serious as though doing their work with passion. He paid no attention to them this time. He was on a mission. He was meeting Gabriel Wilson, his mentor. Gabriel Wilson was the marketing manager and he was previously appointed by the CEO Bowman Hill to work closely with Dion. This arrangement was done to have Dion mentored into becoming the next CEO of ITSU. During his stay, Dion walked around like he was already the CEO. He gave written warnings, he fired people and threatened people. He made them work intensely hard. He was intolerant of any of them. He gained himself a harsh reputation where the employees would be fearful for their jobs every time they saw him. “I’ve come to drop these. The very last badge of files I had,” said Dion as his man—Liam—put the box of files on the table. Dion was in Gabriel Wilson’s office. He was leaving his job as an intern under Gabriel’s mentorship. “Oh, good. You must be excited being the acting CEO of Metallic Wholesalers.” “Don’t insult me, I am for greater things.” “Right,” Gabriel was not at all surprised by his response. In fact, he knew something bad was to come out of that little mouth of Dion. “Hey, don’t push them too hard. Be gentle. Be a good leader. Coercive power doesn’t always work, you know.” “I do not recall myself being neither rough nor coercive, Gabriel.” Gabriel did laugh, “You don’t?” “I only encouraged them to work hard and you saw the results, I did a good job.” “Well, let’s see how things go that side, don’t jump the broom just yet. I give you a month tops and I swear to God, all your employees that side will quit their jobs.” “Who would want to quit their job? Money talks in this world.” “Not everyone is tied down by money, Dion.” “Since, we’re dishing out advices, I might as well throw in mine; you better treat me right, Gabriel, because I’ll be your boss very soon.” “I will have quit by then.” “And where would you go?” “Why don’t you worry about yourself and your new employees that side? I tell you, with you out of here, everyone will be thrilled to know that their nightmare is gone.” “I’d encourage them not to get carried away very much because I’ll be back soon and by that time, I will have bigger power. And hell will reign,” and then Dion winked and left. It was obvious now that the journey was leading back to Durban. Dion met a surprise. A grievous surprise that was. His innings must have shattered million times finding Felicia in his office like that. He felt a sense of disappointment and in his heart was a tearing that went rapidly. That was the woman he had been trying to avoid for so long. She had made herself so comfortable on his chair in his office. “You,” Dion gently scoffed. She looked up and saw him with his two people behind him—Liam and Thandi. She got up, “Dion!” She was a feisty one. She glared in his eyes that would not dare look back. She did not like that. She went round the table to start hitting the man who felt no pain from her spongy fists. “You disappear on me and when you come back you say nothing?!” She continued her struggle. He would hold back her wrists which she pulled back. “That is no way to treat a girlfriend, you moron!” Felicia saw that she was ineffective, hence, she started throwing him whatever she found on his table. Liam and Thandi hid perfectly well behind Dion. Not one object touched them. They knew that that battle was not for them to fight. The woman was so loud that she had grabbed the staff attention. Eyes peeked through the blinds into the office. “Felicia!” Dion cried. “Felicia!” but the woman was enraged. She opened the drawers, more pens, she threw. More papers and files, she threw. A puncher, she threw. Some keys, she threw. A stapler, she threw. She threw many things until the drawers were empty. She hauled the drawers out and tossed every one of them. Dion finally went and grabbed his woman to himself. “Felicia…” Calm. “Dion, I’m sorry.” “You better be. Those things you threw really hurt.” It was a whisper between the two lovers, a whisper unworthy of the others’ ears. “Dion, you are horrible,” she mourned. “Very horrible, Dion. I wanted to go with you to see your father and see United Kingdom. Dion, you disappeared on me. Dion, you wouldn’t pick up my calls. Dion, you don’t care.” “I do—” “Shut up!” she was getting mad again, “Because you don’t! Everybody knows the only person Dion Hill ever cares about is Dion Hill.” “Hush.” He was stroking her to have her calm down. He had her in his chest. She looked over his shoulder and she saw Thandi who was standing with Liam. “Did you take off with her?” Dion looked back to see, and he saw it was Thandi that Felicia referred to. He was disappointed. He felt insulted, “What?”
