Lucien didn’t go home either. He went to his office. He hadn’t been able to concentrate all week, and now it was worse. Pregnant. The word replayed in his head. He wasn’t afraid of being a father. He was afraid of becoming his own. Cold. Unavailable. Present, but never really there. His phone rang. His mother. He almost didn’t answer. But he did. “Lucien,” her voice was sharp as always. “I heard you and Aira are separating.” He closed his eyes. Of course she had heard. “Yes.” A pause. “And you think that’s wise?” “It’s done.” “Is it?” she asked coolly. “Because I just saw her at the clinic this morning.” His stomach dropped. “What?” “She didn’t see me.
