AFTER waving good bye to Jenny, Mia sauntered where her car was parked. The other woman was parked on the other side.
It was after midnight. The load of the day’s work was taking a toll on her body.
Hours ago, they got a call regarding a burglary at the center of the town.
The owner was hurt during the burglary. Jewelry worth more than ten thousand was taken. They already have the copy of the CCTV. He was smart enough to install security to protect his business.
She yawned as she traversed the silent, empty road.
On normal days, she would be in her bed like everyone else at this time of night. In fact, she was about to get home when she received the call.
She and Jenny were at the bar nursing their third bottle of beer when they got the call. Tomorrow was their scheduled off, they wanted to drink the night away.
Another yawn escaped her mouth as she ambled up the stairs.
A frown marred her face when she noticed a person sitting beside her door. As she drew near, she realized that it was Violet.
The woman has her head on her knees, and she appears to be sleeping. A luggage was standing beside her.
After another glance, she opened the door and closed it again. She did not bother to wake the woman.
Done with the shower, she was getting ready for bed when she heard knocking on her door.
“I know you’re still awake, Mia. Can we talk?” Violet’s voice was a little hoarse from sleep.
She remained on her feet. She made a staring contest with the door.
“Please.”
She did not say a word. She was fighting with herself. Turned, throwing herself at the woman from the other side of the door, or start a fight. She was leaning on the latter.
“I can explain if you let me.”
Not wanting her neighbors to file a complaint against her, she marched towards the door.
Mia looked away when she unlocked the door. She purposely avoided the other woman’s eyes.
She knew that those purple eyes would thaw the anger she had been nurturing for the last two weeks.
“Leaving without telling you was a huge mistake on my part.” Violet started.
They were still standing by the door.
“I am new to this. I’m used to deciding and going to places without asking someone’s permission or opinion.”
Mia raised her head. Their eyes met.
“It was a lame excuse. Bottom line is, I’m owning that mistake.”
She took a deep sigh. Mia was still staring at Violet.
“I’m furious,” Mia muttered. “I’m actually prepared a speech about updating your partner, a message or two maybe. I’m also expecting a possibility of a fight.” She made a face when she said that. “It’s not gonna happen, is it?”
With a shake of her head, the purple-eyed woman responded. “No. I mean, about the fight. But I’m willing to listen to the speech.”
The shorter woman huffed.
“Am I forgiven?”
“Not really. I’m the kind of girlfriend who needs to be informed where my partner is going. Not for permission but rather, the point of knowing.” She still cleared.
“Noted.”
Mia opened the door wider. The other woman pulled the luggage as she went inside.
“Did you come here all the way from the airport?”
“Yes. You’re not answering my calls.”
“You deserved it.”
“I know. I will try my very best not to forget to tell you about my whereabouts.”
“That’s better.”
Smiling, Violet pulled Mia for a hug.
“I miss you.”
“Not me.” She embraced the tall woman tightly. “My thoughts were focused on how much I was upset with you for leaving without the audacity of informing me that you have a two-week seminar in Korea. You were with me the whole weekend.”
A chuckle exited Violet’s lips before pressing a quick kiss on her forehead. She uttered another apology.
“I wanted to spend the weekend with you. I don’t want to dwell on the thought that I will spend another two weeks away from you. I may have purposely left out the thought of telling you.”
“And I should be flatter, Dr. Woods?”
“That’s the truth.”
“Fine. You are forgiven.” The tall woman laughed out loud. “Just this once.”
“Thank you.” Another kiss on the lips, Violet let her go. “Do you have food? I’m really hungry. The last meal I had was on the plane. It was hours ago.”
Although their relationship was still new, Mia noticed that her partner had a very big appetite.
“Cold pizza?”
“That would do.”
After a few long strides, the starving woman was already by the fridge.
Without reheating the pizza, she bit into one slice before taking a seat at the two-seater dining table.
Mia placed two cans of soda and a pitcher of water beside the now-empty box of pizza. When she returned with the glasses, the soda was gone, too.
Grinning, the tall woman glanced at her. She also burped loudly.
“I will treat you to dinner tomorrow. A better one, I promise.”
“Are you sure about that?” She was answered with another chuckle. “You should take a shower. I’ll clean this up.”
“Thank you.”
With the sound of the water running in the background, Mia cleaned up. Her thoughts also went to the woman under the shower.
A couple of weeks ago, she received a call from an unknown number. Without inhibition, she answered it without knowing that it was Violet.
The woman called just to tell her that she had safely landed in Seoul, South Korea. Surprised by the information, she was only able to listen to the other woman rumble about the seminar that would last for two weeks.
Without making a statement, she ended the call and did not bother to answer any calls that had an international code in it.
Since Violet left for abroad, her full attention was on the job. Thankfully, there were enough cases that she could focus on. The chief was satisfied that she had found decent evidence to catch the culprit.
While waiting for the tall woman to finish the shower, she brought the trash out.
It took her six minutes to return to the apartment.
With a smile on her face, she almost ran to the bedroom. Excitement was running through her veins at the thought of Violet.
The smile on her lips faded.
On top of the bed, Violet was sleeping soundly. Her face was illuminated by the lampshade on her side of the bed. Her mouth was a little ajar.
Mia glowered at the snoring woman.
She walked to the other side of the bed. She made a face as she nestled under the blanket.
