SURPRISE was an understatement when Mia saw Violet by her door when she reached the second floor of the apartment building.
Smiling widely, she approached the tall woman who was speaking with her next-door neighbor. His name was Matt, if she remembered it correctly. She did not know that they were acquainted.
“Thank you,” Violet said before turning to the detective. “Hey.”
“Hey yourself, Doc.”
Mia was even more surprised when she was pulled for a tight hug. However, she hugged the other woman tighter.
“I miss you, too.” She whispered.
Her neighbor went back to his unit at the sight. It must have been too much for him.
She felt a kiss on her head. Violet pressed her face on her hair a bit longer before letting her go.
“Are you okay?”
“I am. Are you?” Mia responded. “You did not tell me that you’re coming back today.”
“I booked the earliest flight after we talked last night.”
“You didn’t tell me that.”
She turned to open the door to the unit. The tall woman was following behind her.
The couch in the living room was still overturned. The magazines that Violet had been reading before she left were scattered on the floor.
The bedroom door was ajar, too.
Mia knew that the same mess could be seen inside.
Aside from the front door, it was the one other door that she did forget to close whenever she left for work.
Her unit has been processed already. Since she lived there, Jenny and another officer, Lester Hobbard, were requested to do the task. They were also assigned to the case to avoid a conflict of interest.
Whoever came to her place was looking for something.
It was the first thing that came to mind when Mia came home.
The precinct received a call that a burglary had happened in this apartment building. It was also a surprise that it was the town’s detective unit.
From the initial finding, the person might be trying to rob the unit. However, Mia reported that nothing was stolen. For now, everything was under investigation.
“Do you have a suspect?”
“None for now. My colleagues are trying to find out the reason for the burglary. However, no other units have been robbed at the given time when my place was trashed.”
When Mia looked at the other woman, Violet was starting to clean up. A frown was plastered on her pretty face. She also noticed that the woman’s purple eyes were a bit darker.
“Are you okay?” She asked.
Her girlfriend’s purple eyes went darker only when they were doing the dirty. It only meant that Violet’s emotions were heightened.
“No.”
“Have you eaten?”
“No.”
She walked back in the direction of the door. She pulled the woman along the way. However, she did not expect to be pulled back. She ended on Violet’s arms.
Eventually, she closed her eyes when their lips collided.
The kiss was different.
It was a bit aggressive than their usual kisses. More demanding than she remembered. Yet, she responded with the same fervor.
They were both panting when their lips parted.
“What was that about?” Mia asked when she found her bearing. Her mind was still swirling from the passionate kiss they shared.
Instead of answering her, Violet pressed her face on her neck. She was breathing heavily.
“What’s going on? Don’t feed me with the lines of missing me.” She butted in. “We worked separately on weekdays. You left just a few days ago.”
Violet straightened. She released another deep sigh.
“Would you like to go on a vacation?”
“W-what?” Startled by the question, Mia frowned at the tall woman.
“I’ll pay for it.”
She viewed Violet in confusion.
The other woman was unsmiling. She cannot fathom the tall woman’s emotion aside from the fact that her face was masked with nothing but seriousness.
“How long would this vacation be?”
“At least a week.”
“How about your work?”
“I can file an extended vacation later.”
“You will do that?” Violet nodded. “Is it allowed?”
“It would.”
Mia breathed out. She pushed the woman away.
She cannot think straight if they were entangled in an embrace.
“What’s going on, Doc?” When Violet did not respond, she continued. “You will not book the earliest flight just because you miss me. You will not ask me for a vacation because you miss me, Violet. What do you know about what happened in my unit last night?” She paused. “I haven’t seen you this anxious. Not even when you told me about the emergency call you got from home.”
Violet looked into her eyes. “It was not robbery.”
“I know that. There was nothing valuable here except for the earrings that cost me $100. It was still in the bedroom, on the table beside the underarm roll-on I’m using. It was exposed to anyone who has eyes.” She disclosed. “Do you know the culprit?”
“I have nothing concrete on my mind.”
“Do you know these people?” Violet nodded. “Who?”
“I have no one in particular, but I know their kind.”
“What kind?”
Violet looked away.
Instead of answering her question, the tall woman walked away. She went in the direction of the bedroom.
“It would be easier for the police officers to solve this issue if you help us find the person who broke into my house. It would be an obstruction of justice if you know about it but refused to tell me.” She ranted as she followed her girlfriend.
She found the woman grabbing the mess on the floor.
The drawers were inserted back into their place, though some of her undergarments were still scattered on the floor.
Gradually, Violet grabbed them.
“Who are these people, Violet?”
“The people who love to mess with people who want to live in peace.”
“Are they after you?”
“Something like that.”
“Who are you?”
“Someone who they don’t want to mess with.”
“You know them?”
“Yeah.”
“Who are they?”
“Someone who’s going down.”
“Are they after me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you are important to me.”
“Are they going to kill me?”
“Not on my watch.”
“Who are they?”
The mess in the room was gone. There was nothing left for Violet to do except to face the detective.
“Who are they, Doc?”
“My kind.”
“What?” Skepticism marred her face. “Your kind?”
Purple eyes met hers. “Do you believe in myth, Mia?”
“Are you on drugs?”
Strained laugh exited the tall woman’s lips. “My kind was worse than the people on drugs, Detective. We’re way worse.”
“Is this your way of kicking me out?”
“I wish, Mia. I wish. But you’re my kind of drug. Withdrawing from you was not even on my list.”
“You’re confusing me, Violet. If you wanted this relationship to be over, just say it. Don’t feed me with bullshit.” Mia uttered with irritation.
She turned away. She was afraid that their conversation might lead to something they both regret.
“Mia, let me ask you again. Do you believe in myth?”
“Not really. It was just the old people’s way of warning the children.”
“Of what?”
“Of going to the woods or on an adventure that might endanger them.”
“Like what happened to your friend in the forest?”
“What are you trying to say, woman? Leave my past out of it.”
Anger was laced in Mia’s tone. Her attention went back to the woman, who had been ambiguous since her arrival.
“I am the type that those folks warn you about.”
“Maybe I should have listened to those folk, Violet. With the kind of face that you have, maybe I should have told myself not to get involved with you. You will hurt me eventually.” She said without caution. “If you continue being cryptic, we’re done.”
Mia rolled her eyes. She headed to the door.
