Chapter 2: Do you want to mate with me?
(Seraphina Vance's POV)
The metallic scent of blood hit my nostrils, strong and fresh. This man was badly injured. And from the color of his blood, he was poisoned by wolfsbane.
I stared at the man lying on the wet cobblestones, my initial fear quickly replaced by my healer's instincts. A pool of dark blood was spreading beneath him. Without a second thought, I rushed to his side, dropping to my knees in the puddle beside him.
That's when his eyes snapped open. Cold, piercing silver eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that rooted me to the spot.
"Leave," he growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble despite his weakened state. "If you don't want to die."
I should have been terrified. Even with wolfsbane suppressing his powers, my wolf, Ava, could sense the formidable aura clinging to him.
"You're hurt," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "I'm a healer. Let me help you."
His lips curled into a snarl, but I ignored it. My hands moved to the wound on his abdomen, and I gasped. The injury glowed with a faint, malevolent silver light. Silver poisoning—the most lethal toxin for our kind.
"Who did this to you?" I whispered, horrified.
"Last warning," he snarled. "Go. Now."
"I'm not leaving you to die," I insisted, pressing my hands against the wound and channeling my healing energy into him.
Before he could argue further, my ears picked up the sound of approaching footsteps. A group of men rounded the corner, their silver blades glinting in the dim light. My blood ran cold. Instinct of danger took over.
Suddenly, the injured man yanked me toward him, slamming my back against the rough brick wall. My eyes widened slightly in surprise as he did.
"Good intentions don't always pay off," he whispered, his breath hot against my cheek before he pressed his mouth to mine.
The kiss was deep and aggressive, a blatant act of possession. I realize it was a disguise, a ploy to make us look like nothing more than a passionate couple in a dark alley. The footsteps grew closer.
"Just another couple hooking up," one of the assassins muttered in disgust.
"His scent isn't here. Let's check the next street," another said.
As their footsteps receded, I felt a wave of relief. I began to struggle, pushing against his chest, but the danger had passed, yet he didn't release me. He easily overpowered my attempts to break free, trapping me between the wall and his hard body. He deepened the kiss, and a surge of anger propelled me. I bit down hard on his lip.
The shock of pain, combined with his injuries, made him stagger backward. He collapsed to one knee, pressing a hand to his abdomen as fresh blood seeped between his fingers.
"You... you..." I sputtered, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. My anger quickly morphed into concern as I saw him falter. "You're bleeding again. We need to get you to a doctor."
"No," he said firmly. "My guards are on their way."
My eyes narrowed. "Fine. Then I'm leaving."
"Wait," he called out. "I owe you. For your help… and for the kiss. Name your price."
I whirled back, fury flashing in my eyes. "I don't need your compensation! I'll just pretend I was bitten by a rabid dog."
I stormed off, my footsteps splashing through the puddles. But I couldn't just leave him there, injured and exposed to the cold rain. I turned back, shoving my umbrella into his hand without looking at him.
"You're injured. Don't sit in the rain," I mumbled, then disappeared into the night.
I returned to my mother's house soaking wet, which was closer than my own apartment. My mother and younger brother were already asleep, and my father was not home.
Thinking about what had just happened, I resented Julian even more. If Julian hadn't insisted that I deliver his coat tonight, I wouldn't have encountered that injured man.
I wouldn't have been kissed against my will...
My cheeks burned as I thought of the handsome, strong man. My wolf Ava also began to stir, a feeling that had never happened even when I still had feelings for Julian.
I clenched my fist, determined that I would never mate with Julian! I would tell my family everything when I woke up tomorrow morning and then cancel the mating ceremony.
The next day, at the Vance house, a drowsy me was slapped awake by my mother. Waking up in pain, I saw my mother's stern face and subconsciously asked, "Mom, what's wrong?"
My mother put her hands on her hips and glared at me. "Why you are here? Isn't today the day for you and Julian's mating ceremony? Hurry up and get up to wash and dress, don't make Julian wait for you!"
The words "mating ceremony" instantly sobered me up. I sat up quickly, my heart racing.
"Mom, I need to tell you something about Julian," my voice shaking. "Last night, I saw him having s*x with another woman. And he insulted me..."
I told her everything. Julian's cruel words about me, his plans to share me with his friends, the way he'd used me.
I cried as I spoke, begging her to understand. "Mom. I can't mated with him."
However, my mother showed no reaction after listening. She waved her hand dismissively.
"It's nothing for a man to make mistakes when he's drunk outside," she said coldly. "What Julian said must have been drunken talk. You shouldn't make a fuss about it."
My brother Rylan came over, his face twisted with anger. "You're being selfish, Sera. We've spent so much money on your education, allowing you to become a healer. You must mate with Julian. His father have given our family a lot of money, and this is the only way you can repay us."
"I earned my way through school with hard work and scholarships!" I retorted. "I didn't spend the family's money, also Throne Pack‘s money whereas you've been spending it all along! If you want their money, you could mate with Julian yourself, but I won't."
My mother's face darkened. "You don't deserve to be compared to your brother. His wolf is talented and, with the help of the Thorne Pack, he has the potential to become a Gamma."
Rylan became even more enraged. He grabbed a silver-tipped whip from the wall, the metal gleaming dangerously.
"You'll go to that ceremony," he snarled, "Or I'll make you regret it."
The silver burned as it struck my arm. I cried out, clutching the wound. Unable to resist, I could only pretend to agree.
"Fine!" I gasped. "I'll go. I'll go." I dressed mechanically, my mind racing.
I pretended to go out to find Julian. In fact, I had sent a breakup text to Julian last night, also mentioning canceling the mating ceremony.
I knew this wouldn't be resolved easily. Once my family discovered what I'd done, they would still force me to marry Julian.
I arrived at the Blood Oath Hall in neutral territory, where werewolf couples registered their matings. Around me, happy couples waited expectantly for their turn.
A bold idea struck me – before Julian arrived, I would find someone else to mate with. Someone to completely free me from Julian and my family's control.
But where would I find such a person?
"So you're only now investigating the fact that my fiancée betrayed me and eloped with someone else?"
A low, cold voice sent a shiver down my spine. It was familiar. I turned and saw a tall figure under a tree, his dark suit impeccably tailored. Even from a distance, I could feel the oppressive force of his presence. His handsome, pale face was the same one from the rainy alley. It was him.
(Damien Blackwood's POV)
I never imagined I'd have such a day.
Yesterday, The ambush had been well-planned. A trusted subordinate had betrayed me, leading me straight into a trap. They'd used wolfsbane to weaken my wolf powers and isolate me from Logan and my guard, then sent a group army of assassins after me.
I, the Alpha King heir of the Northern Territory, the Alpha of the dominant Blackwood Pack, weakly lying in a filthy alley while a stubborn she-wolf tried to save me.
When she left, I watched her disappear into the night, the umbrella she'd given me still in my hand. My wolf, Logan, who had been silenced by the wolfsbane, stirred with a surge of agitation. This girl… she was furious with me, yet she had still shown me kindness. I traced the stinging cut on my lip where she'd bitten me and, to my own surprise, found myself smiling. What a fascinating creature.
The next day, I stood outside the Blood Oath Hall, the very picture of composure as I spoke to my Beta on the phone, though inside I was seething.
"No need to look for her," I ordered Gareth. "Am I supposed to mate a woman who eloped with another man?"
"But your grandfather, the Alpha King, has decreed that you find a mate to breed with today," Gareth replied, his voice laced with guilt. "He said if you don't, he... he won't live much longer..."
I pinched the bridge of my nose, fighting back a wave of frustration. An ultimatum from a old Alpha King. Before I could respond, a clear, soft voice sounded from behind me, a voice I recognized instantly.
"Hello, sir."
I turned. It was the girl from the alley. Surprise cut through my anger, and I felt the corners of my lips lift involuntarily.
"It's you."
"It's me," she confirmed, then hesitated, her expression shifting from uncertain to fiercely determined. "You said last night that you would grant me a wish. Does that offer still stand?"
"Yes," I nodded, intrigued. "What do you want?"
Her cheeks flushed a delicate pink, her gaze unwavering. "I, uh… I heard your… your mating partner ran away. So, I was wondering… do you want to mate with me?"
