CHAPTER 15 THE PROMISE Isabella The sun was setting over the cliffs when my phone rang. I was sitting on the terrace, a book open in my lap that I hadn't turned a page of in forty minutes. Camille had gone upstairs to shower, leaving me with the sound of waves and the impossible weight of thoughts I kept trying to bury. My gaze snapped to the screen watching the screen lit up with a name I didn't expect. Julien. I stared at it for a moment, something unfamiliar twisting in my chest. I don't know if to call it guilt or surprise, but it was definitely one of the two. Julien rarely called or texted if I didn't call or texted first. I answered. "Hey." "Hey yourself." His voice was warm, warmer than it used to be. "Did I catch you at a bad time?" "No, I'm just sitting on the terrace.
