Emmett’s P.O.V
When I found dad in the shower, I lost my s**t! Only coming to when Leah's dad pulled me off of my father, he wasn’t moving. Served that fucker right. He led me to believe that inflicting pain on a woman was how you show love! Dam him to hell and back.
“Emmett, I have to take you down to the station son.”
He told me...
“My… my mom, is she okay? And brace.. Leah, how is she?”
“They are both okay, son, but now I have to take you down to the station.”
Mr Lockwood cuffed my hands together while he told me my rights and drove off to the station. He led me to the interrogation room.
“Alright son from the being, tell me what happened”
I explained to him how dad had been abusing mom since I was little, and how he told me that. That was how he showed love to mom and I believed him.
“My mother never showed that what he was doing to her hurt or was wrong. She would smile when he gripped her too tight or shoved her. I never saw her cry or bleed. I guess she hid those things away from me. Until a few hours ago.”
“Okay and what happened a few hours ago?”
“I was at Shaun’s place, played some games, then watched a movie. It was about her husband who abused her, and she called the police on him. I said to Shaun that she didn’t love him, because why would she put him in jail if all he had done was show her he loved her? That’s when they told me that it was wrong. I remembered dad was coming home and always when he returned from a business trip, he gave her love marks, as he put it. I found mom bloody and crying for the first time, then I just lost it.”
“Okay son, your dad is in a critical condition. So, at the moment, this would be called attempted murder. Do you understand that?”
“Yes sir, I do.”
“I know you did this to help your mom, son, but you can’t take the law into your own hands. Has no one ever told you that what your father was doing was wrong? And how is it that for so long this was the first time that you have seen a movie based on abuse?”
“Dad made me believe that, that was how a woman wanted to be treated and mom never showed signs of hating the things he did to her. Also, I was never allowed to watch television growing up. We owned one, but it was in mom and dad's room.”
“Alright son, I’ll have to keep you here for the night, just until I get a statement from your mom, but I'd suggest she gets you a lawyer. You get a lawyer.”
“Leah, is she going to be okay?”
“Yes she is. Don’t worry about her right now. Hopefully, she will be home in a few hours. Would you like me to say anything to her?”
“I’d like to be the one to talk to her if that’s okay, although she will probably hear about this before I get a chance to speak to her, so you might as well tell her about what has happened. Or am I able to see her just to explain?”
“I’ll have to hear what she has to say, son. I’ll be back in the morning to check on you okay.”
Mr Lockwood left, and I was taken by another officer to the holding cell, but this didn’t bother me. What bothered me the most was that I hurt someone I love, thinking that it was right. Would she even forgive me? Will she wait for me if they find me guilty? I didn’t even know how this worked, but I didn’t care.
My father got what he deserved. I only hope my mother and Leah can forgive me. If I were to lose Leah I’d be broken. I just hope she understands why I did what I did even though it was wrong. I was taught differently. Sleep failed to come to me. My mind kept going back to all the times I have hurt Leah and, to be truthfully honest, my actions towards her hurt me too.
I’d have to make this right whenever I get out of here. If given a second chance, I will show her how sorry I am for treating her the way I did.
Leah’s P.O.V
I was feeling good about myself, so I took a shower and washed my hair. Yes, my eyes hurt, so did my head, but I pushed past that nothing was going to change my good mood. I got dressed, left my long hair wet and loose so it could dry naturally. The bell rang. Dad has a key I’m sure, so why is he ringing the bell? Maybe his hands are full, or he forgot his keys. I took my time down the stairs and the bell kept on ringing.
“Geez, keep your pants on. This is as fast as I can go!”
I shouted, hoping dad could hear me. When I opened the door, I was surprised to see Shaun and another girl from school standing there.
“What do you want, Shaun?”
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he was gawking at me with his mouth hanging open.
“Close your hole Shaun, you’ll catch flies”
I said to him
“I… er sorry uhm… wow you look...
“I look What? Why are you here?
I cut him off mid-sentence.
“Sorry I just came by to see how you are doing.”
“Well you saw so you can leave now.”
“No wait, I... we came to talk to you.”
“About what?”
“Can we come inside?”
The girl asked
“Fine but make this quick”
Once I led them to the lounge area, I offered some sodas to them.
“So why are you here?”
“Well, this is Anastasia, my younger sister.”
“Hi, I’m Leah, but I’m sure that’s not what you came here for!”
“Hi, no, that’s not what we are here for. Well, we actually came here to tell you something, and before you say anything, just please listen okay.”
Anastasia said
“Okay I’ll listen”
“We know what Emmett has been doing, and it’s not right. I know I’ve asked him many times why he would always treat you the way he did, but he would always tell me to butt out. He can be intimidating and, honestly, he frightens me a bit, but last night at our house something happened that made him realize that what he had been doing to show you that he loved you was wrong."
“Oh come on Shaun, what he means to say is that since the first day that Emmett saw you at school he has loved you. It’s cute, I think, so he rushed home to tell his mom all about his future wife. His father overheard, gave Emmett advice on how a woman should be treated and loved, which is actually bullying, but come on, he was a kid, and he thought his dad was helping him win you over. Turns out his dad has been abusing his mom all these years in front of him and his mother never once let on that it hurt or anything like that.”
Anastasia finished
“So what does this have to do with me?”
“He thought that what he was doing to you was love Leah.”
Shaun said
“That’s bullshit and you know it!”
“Yes, it may seem that way, but you had to see his face when my father told him that it wasn’t love, it was abuse. He ran home because his dad came home from a business trip, and he would always show love to his mother when he was out of town. Emmett found his mom in bad shape when he got home and lost it, beat his dad to a pulp. I’m not here to excuse what he has done to you, but it was what was taught to him Leah. Emmett was a young boy, and he never once thought that his father was teaching him the wrong things.”
Anastasia said
“So you want me to believe he loves me?”
“Look, we don’t know everything. That is all we know. I’m sure Emmett will clear things up better than we can, just don’t give up on him.”
Shaun said
“Well, that’s just, I don’t know, I… what do you expect me to do?”
“Talk to him Leah, he really cares about you.”
Shaun said
“Okay,"
