“To think I stayed in Hawthorn so I wouldn’t have to spend my summer at my dad's,” Daphne sighed.  We had just returned to my room where she’d been sleeping these past few days (thankfully she hadn’t gotten herself in the basement, but she was always close to it). The moment I could get her alone, she crumbled to her knees in fright and I only threw more salt on her wounds when I told her she needed to appease Ezra's controlling nature because the basement that awaited her wasn’t a place either of us wanted her to be. For now, she mainly stayed in my room while I slept in Ezra’s room to keep him content. Newly installed bars lined the window on the outside of each room so we couldn’t escape.
