A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: The state of Missouri played both sides in the early stages of the American Civil War. Slavery was legal in the border state between the northern the southern regions of the country but the state initially chose to remain neutral during the war. Because most sympathies lay with the North, more troops from Missouri eventually allied with the northern forces than with those of the South but there are lots of stories out there of Missourians fighting neighbor against neighbor. At the time of publication of this story, a study done by a committee of local business people and civic organization members in St. Louis in 2015 recommended the relocation of the Confederate monument located in Forest Park in the city to the Missouri Civil War Museum.
