The storm passed into the night. Their pursuers were long behind them and still the beast continued without rest. The boy huddled in his wet clothes and clutched his father’s sword. He was in no position to command or guide his mount. Who had the power to command a unicorn to do anything? A unicorn. He was riding a unicorn. When the beast appeared in front of him and knelt so that he could climb onto its back, the boy did not have time to understand the significance. The unicorn reared and defiantly whinnied at his uncle. Then the beast pivoted around and galloped away, faster than his father’s fastest horses.
