The hotel was strangely quiet.
Irene Holmes had wisely refused any new bookings for two days after the G-8 meeting. Most of the rooms had emptied after the final dinner; some had planned to leave anyway, others had chosen to depart as soon as the security order was lifted; without dessert.
The British Prime Minister and his former runway-model wife stayed over in the Queen’s suite and the Italian leader with his latest girlfriend in the King’s suite, but otherwise the hotel had emptied. Both couples appeared to be sleeping in.
Kate had thought to make herself and the guests some breakfast, but Dirk had shooed her over to the empty side table where Kate had started this whole adventure.
