Finally Free

Nina's pov I froze. Blake's mark! I hadn't given it a second thought despite being marked several months ago. Especially since he didn't pester me about it. I watched his eyes getting darker with each passing second, my heart pounding in my chest. There was no point in denying it. My mark was crystal clear and honestly I wanted to own it. But Drake was scary… so scary. His facade ended and the real Drake now stood in front of me. The Drake I encountered in the past. The Drake who loathed me for giving birth to daughters and not sons. He lunged forward, grabbing me by the shoulders. I gasped. He wouldn't hesitate to harm me. He never did. “Who marked you?” He growled into my face, droplets of spit hitting my face. “Have you been f*****g around, you slut? What the f**k? You are my wife! Mine!!” His thunderous voice resounded in the house. In the past, I was so scared whenever he got violent, especially if he was drunk. But this time, his outburst angered me. His? I wasn't his. Not anymore. He squeezed my shoulders so hard that it hurt. Despite trying my best to stay calm, I couldn't help but resist. I knew struggling against him would only make it worse, but it hurt so badly. I squirmed, hoping to break free. “Drake…” I said breathing out heavily. “You're hurting me.” He gritted his teeth. “Who the f**k cares about a w***e? You let yourself get marked.” I knew reasoning with him would be a waste of time. My thoughts drifted towards the vial in my pocket. The perfect time would never arrive. I'd just have to do it. “Drake,” I said, looking into his face. “That's not what happened. I didn't sleep with anyone, I promise.” It wasn't a lie. I never slept with Blake. The mark was his attempt to save my life from certain death. But my words only angered him more. His grasp on my shoulders tightened. I was almost certain he would try to break a bone just like he had done in the past. “Lies,” he hissed into my face. He suddenly let go of me. I knew he wasn't done though and I should have been prepared for the sharp blow to my face. But I wasn't. My left cheek stung with the force of the impact and stumbled to the floor. Panting heavily, I composed myself. At least I had a few minutes to gather my thoughts. “Did you forget that our divorce was never finalised? You are still my wife for f**k's sake. How dare you…” I slowly slid my hand into my pocket and took the vial. It was now or never. “Do you know how many nights I thought about you? I haven't touched… no. I haven't even glanced at another female after you. I did everything to start over. I made this land mine just so we can have a new life. I did everything in my power to get it done even if it meant killing…” He trailed off. I frowned. Killing? He killed someone? I glanced over my shoulder, wondering who he killed. He seemed to have realised that he had said something he shouldn't have. He shook his head and sneered at me. “But it looks like you couldn't keep your legs closed.” He grabbed me by my hair and forced me to stand up. I winced in pain. “Don't worry. You can be my w***e, Nina. From now on I'd treat you like one.” I slammed the vial’s tip into his thigh and injected the contents into his body. He hissed and shivered while releasing me from his cruel grasp. The empty vial was still on his thigh. He looked at it and then at me, the anger that twisted his face now vanished. Perhaps he realised what had happened. I took several steps away from him, just so he wouldn't be able to grab me again. Just a few more minutes and he would be out cold. He fell onto the floor, breathing heavily. I smiled. The effect was quick. He cast a concerned gaze at me as beads of perspiration appeared on his forehead. It was as though he was asking me if he was dying. I just smiled - almost professionally. Just like I smile at my patients undergoing anaesthesia. Only this time, I had no good intentions towards my abusive ex husband. “You're not dying, Drake. Relax,” I said, my heart's palpitations now returning to normal. “By the way, I wasn't lying. This mark on my neck is my soulmate's attempt to save my life after a grave injury. I would have died without it.” He stared at me, his eyebrows knitting together. I bet he had a lot of things to say but was too drowsy or scared to utter a word. I almost laughed. It was fun to see him so weak. “I met my soulmate but I didn't have s*x with him… yet. But now I think I should,” I said, my professional smile gradually morphing into a smirk as his eyes closed. I breathed a sigh of relief. I won this round, but I had to leave before he woke up. He would be out cold for a couple of hours so I had time. I looked around for something I could use to tie him up, but the place was spotless. Hoping I'd find something, I started to go through the kitchen cabinets. When I saw where he kept the knives, several thoughts went through my mind, which I pushed away. Perhaps he killed someone and perhaps he was an abusive jerk, but I didn't want his blood on my hands. Wishing I had brought my phone with me I gave up and rushed to get my daughter. Perhaps if I got to the castle in time I could get Blake's help. I ran upstairs and tapped on Bree’s soft cheeks. “Bree? Wake up. We have to go. Now!” She didn't respond. I frowned. That wasn't like her. I checked her heart rate and breathing. At least she was alive, but I knew he must have done something to her. So I picked her up and rushed down the stairs, casting one last glance at Drake, who was still lying on the floor where I left him. “Good bye, Drake. I hope we never meet again,” I whispered and ran outside. I was about to shift into my dragon when I saw something familiar in the sky. I squinted my eyes wondering if it was an illusion. A smile curled on my lips when I realised that I wasn't hallucinating. Three dragons swooped down the sky and landed elegantly on the ground. Riding on one of them was our Queen Zelda. She jumped off the beast and ran towards me while my mate and the king morphed back to their human forms. They ran towards me and looked at my daughter, relief washing over them. “Where is he?” Blake demanded. I gestured towards the open door. “He's unconscious right now. It'll take a while for him to regain consciousness.” They gaped at me. “Wow, cool. You knocked him out cold,” Zelda said. I wasn't a fighter so that would have been a surprise. Blake looked so proud. I chuckled. “I didn't exactly fight. I just used a little something from the hospital,” I said, winking at them. “That's good. I'll grab him and take him to the dungeon,” Blake said, glancing at Bree. “Take her home, okay?” I nodded my head. “Girl, next time let us know what the plan is.” Our king snickered while Queen Zelda patted my right shoulder. I winced. Perhaps my body was bruised where he squeezed. “Are you hurt?” She asked, concerned. I offered a tiny laugh. “It's nothing. I'm glad this is over now.” My gaze turned towards my daughter. “I think we should get her checked. Bree isn't a heavy sleeper.” “Let us escort you. Blake will make sure he doesn't escape,” King Travis said. I prepared to shift. Tears of triumph gathered in my eyes when I realised that I had truly won against Drake. I was finally free.
