What Are You?

BREATHING heavily, Winona woke up from slumber. It was that dream again. Lately, the recurrent appearance of her parents in her dreams has been a regular thing. It was more of a nightmare than dream to be quite honest. It was the same scene over and over again. It was when she was five when she saw her father, the alpha of their pack, raised his hand to hurt her mother. It was the first that she saw violence right before her eyes. She was playing in the living room with the Lego blocks when she saw her father dragged her mother from the kitchen. With a little protest from her mother, her father lifted his hand and slapped her mother in the face. She saw that her mom’s lip bleed from the force. The dream usually ends when her little self cried. Still breathing fast, she looked around the white walls of the room she was in. There were two doors in the door. One was ajar that showed the restroom while the other has a rectangular glass on top of the knob. The glass showed another white wall. The still dark skies can be seen at the window that has navy baby blue curtain. She frowned at the dextrose in her left hand. With difficulty, she moved herself into a sitting position. She reached for the bottle of water from the desk beside the hospital bed she was lying on. She almost finished the whole bottle. From the printed hospital gown she was wearing, she peeked at her chest. There was pain and a lot of discomfort in the valley between her breast. A large bandage obscured her sight from seeing the amount of damage she has on her chest. Fury enclosed her mind when she remembered what happened last night. Yes, it was last night. The digital clock on the wall confirmed the current date and time. She and the two other members of her pack were on their way to the private hangar where the pack’s Cessna awaits when they were ambushed.  The two-day Alpha conference has been concluded at six in the evening but they had to stay for a couple of hours for the kickoff party that the high alpha has prepared for them. The driver was shot in the forehead that caused the car to crashed at the tree. Series of gunshots echoed in the stillness of the almost abandon road. She and the other pack warrior was able to exit the car. However, her sentinel was shot in the heart twice. She did, too. She dug up the Glock under the passenger seat. She put it there for emergency purposes. She was able to fire back. She dashed anywhere where she could hide herself. Eventually, she found the streets. She was already shot and bleeding heavily. She felt the throbbing in the forearm and shoulder but the most painful was in the chest part. She was lucky that the direction that she ran into was a busy street. She was bleeding profusely but unable to call for help. She never knew if the culprit followed her. Despite the disoriented bearing, she still remembered that it was an old man who cried for help. Through the in and out of consciousness, she heard the voices of the medical worker that states about GSW and a soft, melodic declaration to save her. The velvety voice has been lulling her until darkness enfold her. She opened the drawer of the table beside the bed. Hope bud inside her when she saw her bloody clothes. Her phone was inserted between her top and pants. She dialed a number and requested the things she needed. It was nine in the morning when Winona was finally discharged from the hospital. She has to seat at the wheelchair to avoid further queries from the medical staff. “Hey, what are you doing?” Winona was about to enter the car. Her other hand was balancing on the arm of the wheel chair. She stilled. She knew that voice. Before she could turn to the person, a hand touched her right forearm. A prickle of electricity seems to passed when their skin touched. The other woman must have felt the same that she immediately let go of her arm. Winona finally looked at the owner of the voice that has aid her through the haze last night. The woman towered over her. Winona stood five feet and six inches but this woman was taller than her by at least four inches. The tall woman has her mouth a little ajar while looking at her hand. Still not speaking, she stared at her. Winona noticed the other woman has hazel eyes but more on the green side. Her long, wavy hair cascade below and above her shoulders. “What are you doing here?” The woman asked again after putting her hand behind her back. “She will be transferred to a private hospital near ours.” Tati responded. Tati or Tatiana was her friend and beta of the pack. She was the one she called up this morning to fetch her from this hospital. “I’m your doctor. I don’t remember signing a paper for transfer. No one called me either regarding this matter.” She heard Tati clicked her mouth. It was a sign that she was annoyed. She faced this woman that claimed that she was her doctor. “Doctor-----” “Doctor Stone. You’re under my charge. Whatever happens to you, it’s going to bounce back to me.” “Nothing’s going to happen to me. I signed a waver that my doctor and the hospital were free of obligation when I stepped out of here.” She noticed the doctor gawking at her while she was explaining herself. She pulled back when her face descends on her. Her eyes widen when she thought the woman would kiss her. Instead, her finger caressed the skin on her face. Seemingly not satisfied, she gripped her chin and moved her face in different angle. “What happened to your face?” “W-what?” “You have a scratched here last night. Even here.” She points at the temple and cheekbones as she talked. “It’s all gone.” There was a tone of disbelief in her voice. The woman scraped the skin on her cheek softly. Winona remained wide eyed at the turn of events. “You don’t have make ups on. It was really gone.” She was flabbergasted when the doctor lifted the sleeves of her shirt. Winona remembered removing the bandage there when she rubbed the itching but healing wound. “Oh, my god! It’s almost healed.” She must have seen the pinkish abrasion her skin. “Stop!” Winona finally said when Doctor Stone was about to raise the hem of her shirt. “What are you doing?” She glared at Tati who was unable to stop laughing at the situation. “I want to see your chest. It was a major operation. It was not supposed to close that fast.” The doctor responded but her face was red with embarrassment. She put her hands in hers when she was about to lift her shirt again. She received a glower from the doctor. Her brow raised at the audacity of this woman. She was stunned when she took her hand off hers and pushed her chest. “Hey!” She protested when she almost staggered on her feet. “You should say ouch.” Tati made an unrestricted chuckled that annoyed her more. “Keep your hand to yourself, doctor.” The surgeon crossed her arms in front of her. Winona wanted to fidget at the stare this woman has been giving. Her green eyes glint with interest. “What are you?” Both she and Tati were silenced by her questioned. The expressive eyes of the doctor met her eyes. There was no curiosity in her eyes. It was deeper than that.
