Chapter 7

1662 Words
After Nadia and Daniella finished enjoying the fried goat meat and goat meat pepper soup that Nadia's mother made, they set off to leave the house. Nadia wore a green dress, and many young women gossiped about her as she walked down to Daniella's house for Daniella to change her clothes. "I can't believe this witch is finally getting married into the Kingston family. How did she charm the Kingston son to come from abroad and marry her?" Nadia overheard one of the young village women gossiping. She narrowed her eyes at them, wanting to respond, but Daniella nudged her to keep quiet and to continue on their way. "If you had the kind of seductive powers that Nadia has, wouldn't you have used it to charm the governor's son into marrying you? Nadia is beautiful, and that's why the Kingston hostess wants her as her son's wife," another lady remarked, and Nadia became the talk of the village. "I wish I had such powers. I want Mrs. Kingston to choose me and not Nadia. Nadia is an uneducated woman; what does she have to offer her rich husband? Dull kids and only her body? He should marry a sophisticated nurse like me and not some uneducated fool," the lady shouted, but Daniella covered Nadia's mouth with her right palm to prevent her from replying to the jealous woman. "Don’t respond to her. You are above their league, so let’s go," Daniella whispered to Nadia's ear, and dragged her away. Nadia arrived at Daniella's home, and Daniella's elder brother, Amos Bright stepped out, seeing Nadia waiting outside on the bench. Amos was a handsome man with a fair complexion. He was a 30-year-old guy who liked Nadia but wasn't brave enough to ask her out. He knew that she was his sister's best friend. "Hi, Nadia, how are you doing?" he asked her. She looked at him and stood up from the long wooden bench as she greeted him, "Good morning, Sir. I'm fine." "I see," Amos scratched his head and said, "Can I speak to you for a moment?" Nadia looked at him in surprise. This was the first time Amos was asking her for a personal conversation. "Okay, what's it about?" she asked, and he sighed as he walked up to meet her. He was very tall, but he was still a student and worked as a bike rider to support his education. They were also poor, which was why Amos hadn't asked her out. "Nadia, I know you might be oblivious to the fact that I really do like you," Amos confessed, and Nadia’s right hand flew to cover her mouth as she gasped, "Ah!" "Yes, I have always loved you, but I wasn't brave enough to tell you this. I know it's already too late for me now, as I heard that you're getting married to the Kingston family tomorrow. I wish I had the money to take good care of you. I would have come to propose to you first, but I didn’t have it, and I can't ask you to wait for me to make it before we get married," he said, and tears welled up in Nadia's eyes. "I am sorry. I didn't know that you liked me in that way. I thought you cared for me because I am your sister's friend," Nadia told him, and he smiled, understanding her feelings. "Both. I do care for you and will always care for you. Do you have a phone so that I can keep in touch with you when you get to the city?" Amos asked her, but Nadia shook her head. "No. But I am going to the market to buy a new phone today. I will collect your number from Daniella," she said. "That's fine. Take care of yourself and accept this cash as my wedding gift for you," Amos gave her $20,000, but Nadia refused to accept it. "No. You should keep it. You will need it more than I will. Besides, I heard the Kingston family is very wealthy since they have already bribed my parents and bought me. So you shouldn't worry," Nadia insisted, recalling that Amos usually gave her gifts; she thought they were just friendly gestures. "Fine, take this $5,000. Let me keep the $15,000. You should use it to buy some little things for yourself," he said, and Nadia smiled at him. "Thank you," she replied, and Daniella finally walked out of the house, seeing them together. "Big brother, what are you telling my friend about?" Daniella asked, noticing her brother giving Nadia money. "Nothing, I'm just telling her about my feelings. I heard she's getting married from Mom, so I had to say my goodbye," Amos said, and Daniella's face reddened in embarrassment as she knew her older brother liked Nadia, but he wasn’t rich enough to take care of her yet. "It's okay. Come on, Daniella, let's go to the market. I will always see your brother as my friend," Nadia said after Amos left them, and Daniella felt sad. "Amos always tells me that he wants to marry you, but I told him that he cannot marry you because he cannot take care of you yet. And you cannot wait for him to make money," Daniella said sadly, as she wore a similar green gown like Nadia, and they walked to the market together. "If only he had told me before today. Then I would have told my mother and declined the Kingston proposal. But your brother never told me about his feelings," Nadia said as she walked along with Daniella. Daniella paused and asked Nadia, "Wait, do you love my brother?" Nadia nodded and replied, "Yes. I used to like him, but I couldn't tell you that. I know your brother has feelings for me, but he never confessed until today. So I cannot do anything to stop the marriage tomorrow." Nadia wiped away her tears, and Daniella sighed as she walked up to meet her, wearing matching black slippers like twins. "It's okay, Nadia. My brother will understand. I pray your husband treats you right," Daniella said to comfort her friend, and Nadia replied, "Okay." They arrived at the market and did a bit of shopping. "How do you think a newly married woman is supposed to dress? Should I buy loose-fitting dresses or semi-nude dresses? You should know that I don't know anything about this man that I am getting married to," Nadia asked Daniella, who smiled. "I think you should buy both. But wear only the semi-nude outfit at night. You know, if you want him to touch you quickly and get you pregnant, or you can choose to irritate him so you can come back and marry my brother," Daniella advised, whispering into Nadia's ear. "What!" Nadia gasped in disbelief, and Daniella laughed. "Yes. Don't you know that once you two are married, if he wants a divorce, he will have to pay you off—like giving you 1 million dollars to leave him alone, depending on his net worth." "Mm," Nadia smiled. "Let me get to the city first and settle into his house. I haven't been to the city before; I just want to have a happy home, and that's all," Nadia added as she continued with her purchases. Nadia selected some loose-fitting dresses and some light, transparent night dresses, as most of her previous clothes were old and worn out. She also picked out some beautiful underwear, panties, bras, pajamas, tights, and tiny sleeveless dresses. "Done," Nadia said as she paid for all her purchases; her mother had given her $200,000 for shopping. Once they were finished, Nadia Harrison used the extra $5,000 that Amos gave her to buy some underwear. She bought a large travel suitcase and loaded all her clothes inside. "I'm going to miss you, babe," Daniella said to Nadia, as she finally helped Nadia purchase a similar Android phone like her own since Nadia liked it. "I will miss you too," Nadia replied as she hugged her best friend. Once they completed their shopping at the market, they took a tricycle back home. Mrs. Diane was happy to see that her daughter had finished her shopping and was just waiting for her husband to come from abroad and pick her up. At night time, the family sat in the parlour together. "I will miss you, Nadia. You should be a good wife to your husband tomorrow," Mrs. Diane told her daughter, and her husband advised Nadia too, "Yes, Nadia, you shouldn't cheat on your husband; that's one thing any man wouldn't forgive in his woman—not to mention staining their family honor and name out there. You should be a decent wife, okay?" "Okay, Dad. Mom, I will miss you too," Nadia hugged her mother. She felt sad about going to a faraway land and leaving her parents behind. "You shouldn't cry. Alfred is in the city, and you can call him whenever you want," Mrs. Diane said, remindind Nadia of her older brother. "Okay, Mom," Nadia replied, then asked, "Did Mrs. Kingston call you? Are they still coming tomorrow?" "Yes. She called me today and told me that they will be here on time tomorrow, but with her second son, as her first son traveled for a business meeting." "Okay. So which one of them is my husband? Am I going to marry both brothers?" Nadia asked in confusion, and her mother replied, "No. She said her first son is your husband. Don't worry; once you get there, you both will have your marriage registered. They will come to pay your dowry tomorrow." Nadia sighed and agreed. "Okay, Mother." She wondered why her arranged husband would travel for a business meeting instead of coming to marry her properly. Finally, Nadia went to her bedroom to sleep as night fell, she anticipated the arrival of her husband the following day.
