My body remained still, rooted to the chair beside the bed as my gaze stayed fixed on Snow. She lay motionless, her breathing steady but faint, her skin pale against the white sheets. Seeing her like this—fragile, unmoving—stirred a deep, gnawing ache in my chest. Guilt curled its cold fingers around my spine. I had made so many promises. Promises to protect her.
