Chapter 5.1: His Parents

2166 Words
HER HUSBAND CAME BACK after a while. He said the food he ordered was already set in the kitchen. It looked like he was making up for what he did to her. “Alright. I’ll join you in a bit,” she said and turned away from him. He was no longer at the door when she looked back. They didn’t talk while eating for a while. Only the sound of utensils could be heard in those moments. She was almost done when their doorbell rang. She stood up to check who it was. Her husband only followed her with his eyes as she got up. Her brows knitted when she saw a familiar woman at their gate. If she wasn’t mistaken, it was the one BK brought to their house recently. Shaking her head, she approached the gate. “Hi,” she greeted. “Is BK there?” “Yes, my husband’s inside.” She emphasized the words ‘my husband’. Hopefully, she’d get the hint. “Husband,” the woman repeated, which irritated her. Well, BK had the audacity to bring another woman into their home, so maybe that’s why this one behaved that way too. It seemed like no one thought it was fine to disrespect her. After all, even BK did. What she wasn’t sure of was whether BK’s women even knew that it was all just an arrangement. “Come in. I think he’s expecting you. There’s still a lot of food on the table,” she simply said instead of causing drama. “Really?” the woman replied, seemingly thrilled. She almost grimaced at that. She widened the gate’s small side door just enough for one person. She gave her an awkward smile as the woman passed by and smiled at her. She watched her go inside. After closing the gate, she quickly went back inside. She walked faster to beat her to the living room. Was she deaf or something? She just said BK was in the kitchen, but she looked upstairs. Wow. Definitely can’t hear. She means, hard of hearing. She walked straight into the dining area. “Who was that?” BK asked when she entered. “Cecilia. Your girlfriend. She was looking for you. I told her to come in since you prepared for her. She was thrilled.” “F*ck!” He stood up right after, wiping his mouth. She grabbed her plate with some food left and placed it in the sink. She’d just go back to it once BK and Cecilia were no longer in the kitchen. BK hadn’t even stepped out yet when Cecilia showed up. “Hi, babe!” The guest greeted him with a smile. BK glanced at her for a second before taking Cecilia’s hand. “What are you doing here? I didn’t say—” “I thought it was today,” the woman replied. She didn’t wait for her husband’s response. She walked away quickly. She only slowed down once she reached the stairs. She glanced back at the dining area; they hadn’t come out. Maybe they were still talking. Or maybe BK was feeding Cecilia. She sat on the bed once she entered her room. Since she still had to get back to the sink, she left the door slightly open to listen for any signs they were coming upstairs. Her meal had gone to waste—hopefully, that wouldn’t bring her any bad karma. After a while, she kept herself busy with a game. She only stopped when she heard the woman’s voice. She stood and slightly peeked at them. They were probably heading to the room. Good—now she could move. Once she was sure they were inside, she left her room and went downstairs. She grimaced when she saw the dishes. BK’s woman really ate. There were three plates in the sink now. Shaking her head, she started washing. Halfway through, she remembered she had work the next day. Coming from here, she might end up late, especially since it was a straight shift. So, she decided to head out after washing the dishes. Before returning to her room, she checked their garage, and both of her husband’s cars were there. They were probably still upstairs. She quickly packed the things she needed to bring. Maybe she’d just come home weekly from now on. It’s not like BK’s parents would visit. She also brought the remaining requirements she had to submit to their office. She didn’t say goodbye to BK because she might disturb them. She’d just text once she arrived at the place she shared with a friend. Just as she was stepping out, the car she had booked arrived. She looked back at the house before getting in. It was an odd hour, so she booked a ride, at least it was direct. The ride didn’t take too long since traffic wasn’t that bad. The driver dropped her at the corner since he refused to go in and said the area was too risky. Shaking her head, she paid him. The driver probably preferred that she get into danger instead. Just one more alley corner and she reached the house. Amelie’s surprised face greeted her. She had only a towel wrapped around her. Her smile was awkward. She guessed right away. She had a man in the room. She almost regretted coming. She hadn’t even put her things down on her small bed when she heard Amelie moan. She quickly covered her ears. She looked for her headset and plugged it into her ears. Just like before, she played music when strange things happened in the other room. Even her bed used to shake back then. She didn’t even want to imagine what more they were doing now. She pressed a pillow to both ears. And to think she already had a headset on. She barely got any sleep because of the noise from the next room. That’s what she left behind in that big house, and yet she walked into the same thing here. She didn’t know what time she fell asleep. Probably really late since she woke up late. Good thing the place she was working was nearby. She had just opened her eyes when her phone rang. Her husband’s name was on the screen. She was still deciding whether to answer. “Where did you sleep?” BK asked right away when she answered. She even rubbed her temple after hearing the question. “At our place. You had someone with you, so I just left. Besides, I have an early shift today—” “You should’ve told me so I could drop you off.” “I’m fine, really. I’m safe and talking to you now. I’m going to hang up—I need to get in the shower.” There was a brief silence on the other end. “Okay.” After BK said that, she ended the call. She looked at her small mirror before leaving the room. She found Amelie having coffee with her boyfriend— no, suitor, but they were already sleeping together. She already knew the guy because he used to visit often. Her friend hated commitment, so that was their setup. She just had coffee before taking a shower. She ate breakfast at a small eatery near the supermarket where she worked. Her friend worked later in the day, so she was the only one who went in that morning. Tomorrow, she would go back to her regular schedule. She was on the tricycle when she glanced at her reflection. The bruise on her forehead was no longer visible. She layered more foundation there so others wouldn’t notice. She buried herself in work over the next few days. JUST AS Daphne said to herself, it took a week before she went home. She didn’t hear anything from BK. It looked like he was fine with it. She had just gotten off the tricycle when she noticed a car in front of their house. She suddenly got nervous. It might be her husband’s parents. She quickly searched for her phone. Her mouth dropped open when she saw 35 missed calls from her husband. “Crap,” she muttered. She checked the messages next. There were around 20 texts from him. Apparently, his mom had been looking for her. He just told her she was on vacation at a friend’s and was on her way home. Good thing her timing was right. Why didn’t her husband say anything earlier? She couldn’t help but swallow hard as she entered their home. She was nervous, totally unprepared. She could hear her husband chatting with his dad. His mom wasn’t speaking, and that’s what made her nervous. She was good at reading people—just one look and she’d know if you were lying. That’s what BK said. That’s why she avoided eye contact with her. She was close to the living room when the woman appeared from the kitchen. She smiled upon seeing her. “Oh, Daphne’s here already, son!” BK’s mother said, which made her husband turn to her. He smiled, so she smiled back. “I’m sorry, baby, I didn’t get to pick you up. I didn’t know Mom and Dad were coming,” her husband said, wrapping an arm around her waist and whispering, “I’ve been calling you all day.” BK glanced at her lips before kissing her. The jolt from the kiss made her pull back immediately. She just smiled and looked at his parents, who were already sitting. Apparently, they had brought fruit from the kitchen. She was the one who felt awkward. Her husband kept kissing her shoulder just to show his parents they missed each other. Apparently, he told them she’d only been gone two days. “How have you been, dear? Any baby news yet?” The couple looked at each other after the mother’s question. She wanted to answer herself. How could she get pregnant with BK when he was sleeping with other women? Multiple, even. “N-no good news yet, Mama,” she said. She felt BK squeeze her hand. He should’ve answered. What did she know about s*x? She had no experience. “Ma, we’ll tell you as soon as we have news,” her husband replied. “Right, baby?” “Y-yes,” she replied. The mother looked at her son, then at her. “Or maybe you two aren’t planning to have kids yet, so there’s none,” she said, glancing at her belly. “Your mom is right. Your mom and I conceived quickly, and even your two siblings had kids right away. So it’s impossible that there’s a problem with your sperm, BK.” Daphne swallowed at the BK’s father’s blunt comment. “I agree, husbie. If you hadn’t been holding back, we’d have had more children already.” “You should rest, dear. Don’t go to work yet,” his mother added. “I agree, wifey. Both of you need to avoid stress. You’ll definitely have a baby soon. We even thought you had good news already.” She simply stared at the exchange of comments, speechless. BK, like her, didn’t say a word. They quickly went upstairs and talked after the parents said they’d stay for three days. The couple even showed them to the guest room. They wanted her room, but BK said it was his office. They believed him right away. “You’ll sleep here,” her husband said once they were in his room. “What? Why? We can just use the adjacent door if your mom checks your room.” “Mom wasn’t born yesterday, Daph.” The tension was clear in his voice. “She’s not stupid.” “Okay. I’ll just get some stuff and put it here.” She had no choice that night. They lay on the bed with a pillow between them. She turned her back on him so she wouldn’t see him. The bed hadn’t even warmed under her yet when there was a knock. It was BK’s mother’s voice. “Son, I’m coming in. I need to ask you something—” Before his mom could finish her sentence, BK rolled over her. She stared blankly at his face as he kissed her. Their eyes were wide open. His stare was intense—almost dreamy. She shut her eyes when she heard the door open. “Oh, sorry, kids. Go ahead, continue! I just wanted to say there’s chocolate in the fridge. You might want some.” And with that, the door quickly shut. They both pulled away when they heard the door close. It looked like she was gone. BK flopped onto her side and stared at the ceiling. He was panting after that stunt. She couldn’t help but curse in her mind. It looks like her husband might be forced to claim her now if things went that way.
