“Thanks,” Daphne said shortly as her husband scooped food onto her plate.
She hadn’t noticed what time he got home last night. All she knew was that when she woke up, he was already beside her, holding her tightly in his sleep. She had smelled his breath earlier—he’d been drinking.
BK smiled at her after serving her food, then helped himself.
“What time are your guests arriving, Ma?” Astin asked their mother.
“Diane and Nikki will be here after lunch. Husbie, did you ask your friends what time they’re arriving?”
“Please check with them, Pa, since we’re setting up the venue. We’re still unsure how many tables to bring out,” BK told his father, Kent.
“Keep it simple, kids. They’re used to low-key gatherings.”
