“What?” That was all that could come out of my mouth when I heard his voice.
How did he know I was at a hotel? I thought the random and creepy interfering in my life had stopped when I moved in with him.
“Who’s that?” Ellie’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
I hung up the phone. “It’s Vito.” I answered, his name tasting like bitter almonds on my tongue.
“What does he want?” Her voice was laced with suspicion and concern.
“He said I should leave the hotel and go back home right away.”
“Why? Is he out of his mind? Why is he trying to control your life?” Ellie’s voice had risen, it was filled with anger and irritation.
