Chapter 9 - Part 2

Chelle slapped Bree's shoulder again. Bree just glared at her. “That's why I told you, no one else should know. I don't want this to start gossip, you know.” She paused for a moment and quickly ate. After several scoops of food, Chelle continued talking. “And another thing, an hour after Sir Jax came back angry, that famous model, Caroline Suarez, came in. You know her, right?” Bree was about to put food in her mouth, but she stopped the spoon halfway. Chelle had really caught her attention. Bree swallowed. So, the gossip earlier was true. Her heart beat faster. Bree was sure Chelle knew more about Caroline's visit to Sir Jax because they were on the same floor. “Caroline Suarez?” Bree couldn't understand her own voice. The feeling of inadequacy she had felt earlier came back. “Yeah, she's so beautiful. I've only seen her in person now. Her face is so small and delicate, no wonder she's so famous and a lot of people want to hire her. But it doesn't end there, girl.” Bree really stopped eating. She put her spoon down on her plate and waited for Chelle to continue. She couldn't wait to hear what she had to say. Even though she felt weird, she still wanted to know the details! She really felt crazy! “After almost an hour, Caroline came out of Sir Jax's office... walking with a limp, girl!” Bree gasped at the revelation Chelle dropped. She already knew about it, but hearing it directly from the one who witnessed it was something else. Bree's face contorted because of it, she couldn't help it, she was really annoyed! What kind of man was Sir Jax? Did he cripple women in bed? She wasn't innocent enough not to know the reason why Caroline was walking like that! She wasn't a child! “It seems like Jax took out his anger on Caroline. What do you think is the reason? What do you think?” Chelle asked Bree. Bree widened her eyes. She looked around because someone might be listening to their conversation! “Well, how would I know! Stop it, Chelle, I'm really scared of you, you know Sir doesn't like gossip like that.” Chelle ignored her. She leaned back in her chair after taking a sip of her soda. “I'm one hundred percent positive,” Chelle added. She was now staring at Bree. “About what?” “That Sir Jax will bring you back to his office. I'm sure of it, he doesn't seem to be able to focus on his work lately.” “I don't know, Chelle. That's impossible because Sir Jax is angry at me, I burned the kitchen of his beloved wife. I'm waiting to see how much they'll deduct from my salary.” Bree was disheartened by what she said. She forgot that she still needed to find another way to earn money. If Jackson deducted from her salary, she was sure she wouldn't be able to save up for the next semester. She would only have enough for food and rent. Bree was surprised when Chelle suddenly kicked her under the table. She looked at her friend questioningly. “It seems Sir Renz is coming to our table,” Chelle said softly. Bree immediately found who she was talking about. Sir Renz was all smiles as he made his way towards their table. Bree smiled. She actually liked him for being so humble and kind. Bree didn't feel uncomfortable around him. In fact, Bree could feel that he could be trusted. His gaze towards her was innocent. Bree knew firsthand how a man would look at a woman with lust. She always saw those looks from her professors and classmates in college. “Hi, ladies. Can I join you?” Renz flashed his mega-watt smile, and almost all the ladies in the cafeteria melted. He had that effect on almost all the ladies in the building. Bree smiled thinly. She was about to speak when Chelle kicked her under the table again. She glared at her. Her kicks were surprising because they were so strong, like a horse's kick. “Oh, it's fine, Sir Renz. We'll be more motivated to eat this.” It was Chelle. Bree shook her head at what her friend was saying. She didn't know what she was trying to achieve. A hearty laugh came out of the young man's mouth. At forty years old, Renz was still in shape. You wouldn't know he was forty because of his good posture and his handsome features. He looked truly young. “Hi, Bree. Did you finish your food already?” Bree looked at the food still on her plate. She stopped eating earlier when she felt sick. Now, she felt like she had to finish it in front of her superior. “Not yet, Sir Renz.” Bree answered softly. Now, she was forced to finish this food. She just smiled at him, picked up her spoon, and started eating. “Good. Join me.” Sir Renz was a pleasant conversationalist. Their table became noisy because of his jokes. Even the women at the other tables were laughing at his jokes. This was one of the reasons why Bree couldn't help but compare Renz and Jackson. Renz was way too nice. Almost everyone was his friend, and he always treated everyone with respect, especially women. But Bree understood why Jackson had a bad temper. It was because of what happened to Katherine Welch, Jackson's deceased wife. It was so painful for a man to see his wife lifeless, and the worst part was the way she died. So she really understood him. The pain he felt was immeasurable. She wasn't in his shoes to judge his actions. Bree was brought back to the present when Chelle kicked her under the table for the third time. She glared at her, but she just shrugged her shoulders. “Do you have a dress for the party tomorrow, Bree?” Renz asked. He was staring at Bree and clearly waiting for her answer. She couldn't go to the party tomorrow because she didn't have money to buy a dress. All the clothes in her plastic closet were just jeans and t-shirts. If she had a casual attire, she wore it whenever she went to the office. Bree smiled awkwardly at the young man. How could she tell him she couldn't go because she didn't have a dress without being embarrassed? “Oh, Sir Renz, that's Bree's problem because we don't have money to buy a dress for that party. It's embarrassing to go there if we're just wearing jeans. So Bree and I decided not to go and just have a movie marathon at my apartment.” Bree closed her eyes. Chelle was really annoying. It was like she was asking Sir Renz for a free dress. Her tone was like she was begging the man. Knowing how generous and kind Renz was, she was sure he would lend them dresses. “Don't worry about it, I'll take care of it. I know a designer, and I'm sure he can lend you both dresses for tomorrow's event.” Bree wasn't wrong. Chelle clapped her hands, seemingly delighted with what Renz said. “Oh, that's so embarrassing for you, Sir Renz. But we won't refuse.” Bree glared at her once more. She was so shameless! Bree wanted to kick her friend under the table, but she thought she might kick Renz instead of Chelle.
