We weren’t welcomed warmly. Not like I expected to be welcomed at all. I’d always been on edge with Ariel’s father. I still was, except that I couldn’t do that now. His eyes were trained on me, eyeing me like a hawk while I simply looked around, waiting for Ariel’s mother. I remembered kidnapping her once. I hadn’t hurt her. It had been to scare Ariel’s father. Who knew I’d end up marrying his daughter because of that. One of the weird ways fate works. Finally, she arrived. It seemed she’d been somewhere. She carried a scent with her I couldn’t quite describe. I wanted to get straight to the point the moment she sat, but she beat me to speaking. “I know why you’re here.” Her eyes were deep, wise, and kind. She looked at me with a sense of urgency as if she’d been expecting me.
