Chapter 2
“Philip McAdams?”
“Here,” Philip resounded as he raised his hand and stood up.
“Ms. Yoo is ready to see you. Please follow me.” Philip buttoned up his suit jacket and followed the secretary to the elevator. He passed by the other applicants there for an interview with the prestigious law firm owned by Lina and her partner, Erika Nai.
Lina had been in search of a new paralegal for her side of the firm after she lost her former Paralegal to drug addiction. But finding a good paralegal in the small city of San Antonio, Texas, was more difficult than she could have imagined.
Philip was nervous as the other applicants scrutinized him. He wasn’t sure why, however. He was dressed professionally, even though he would be the first to admit he wasn’t dressed in Armani or Eddie Baur. His jacket was simple, and it was cheap. Mostly because he got it from Good Will, but no one else needed to know that.
“Wait right here while I inform Ms. Yoo of your arrival,” the secretary told him. He nodded, clutched his folder containing his resume, and waited patiently. Philip looked around the office and admired the décor. The walls were sheen with dark grey, and the furniture was black with accents of color. The coffee machine, the water dispenser, and even the cups and napkins were either purple or black. If the lights weren’t on and the windows were closed, the room would be pitch black. Philip noticed that only this particular part of the office was this dark. Dark yet calming.
After what felt like five minutes, but was really only one, the secretary came out and gestured for Philip to enter. He straightened his jacket once more and walked through the door composed, calm, and collected. Unfortunately for him, he came face to face with the stunning beauty of Lina Yoo, Attorney at Law. He dropped the folder he was holding, and everything scattered across the floor.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Philip stammered and hit the floor to pick up his resume and cover letter. Sadly, in his haste, he ended up kicking the folder toward Lina’s desk, and it slipped under the crack perfectly. The edge of the folder hit Lina’s brand new suede Christian Louboutin red bottom heels and left a small scuff mark. Lina lifted a brow and looked down at her feet, seeing that her new shoes had been damaged.
Lina bent down, picked up the folder, stood up, and came around to stand in front of Philip, who was still picking up the scattered papers on the floor, not realizing his folder was missing.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Yoo. I—Uh—s**t, where’s my—” Philips stopped ranting as he heard a foot being tapped at him. He slowly looked up and followed the image in front of him. His eyes were soaked in muscular and sexy legs as his eyes met Lina’s beautiful yet surprisingly aggressive stare. Her eyebrow was quirked, and she gave him a murderous gaze. Philip was instantly terrified that he might have failed his interview before starting just because of the look Lina was giving him. But for some odd reason, he also found her murderous glint alluring.
“Are you looking for this?” Lina asked as she held out his folder.
“Oh, um, yes, thank you, Mrs.—”
“It’s Miss.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s Miss. I’m legally separated and on the verge of divorce.”
“Oh, I’m sorry—”
“Enough with the apologies. Gather your belongings and have a seat. We’re already behind because of your incessant apologizing.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Philip quickly replied. His response made Lina stop momentarily. Everyone who worked for her called her ma’am; after all, she was their boss. But hearing it come from Philip hit Lina differently. She quirked a brow, moved her eyes to the side as if she were looking behind her, and smiled.
She went around her desk and sat down, crossing her legs under the desk. She placed both hands on top of her desk and interlocked her fingers.
“Are you ready?” she asked.
“Yes. I do apologize for my incompetence, Mrs. … Ah … I mean, Ms. Yoo. I seem to be quite nervous.”
“If a simple job interview can make you nervous, Mr. …” Lina paused and put her hand out. “Resume?” Lina said as she saw Philip staring at her beautifully manicured hand. Her long coffin nails were his favorite color, cerulean-blue.
“Huh? Oh, yes, yes. Here you go,” he stammered as he handed her his resume. Lina studied him and looked at his resume.
“Mr. McAdams?” Lina quirked her brow again, took a glance at Philip, then looked down at her resume. Although Lina’s tough exterior made Philip sweat bullets, Lina actually analyzed him. Although his surname was McAdams, his skin was lightly tan. Perhaps he’s half-Latino? Line thought to herself. His resume was pretty bare; that was something she had noticed all too quickly when he handed it to her. Regardless of that, she was intrigued by him.
She was feigning reading his resume, even though there wasn’t much to read, but while doing that, she was using her peripheral to gauge Philip. He was cute. That, she knew for sure. He had glasses, dark brown eyes, and chubby cheeks. She tried to picture him without them, and she could see the potential behind the frames. But interestingly enough, she was drawn to him because of his baby-like face. He had a sweet and innocent look about him. He was not the most handsome man she had ever seen, but he was cute in a quirky kind of way. His body wasn’t the most fit, but Lina didn’t like fit, so that wasn’t an issue for her. She preferred her prey on the chubbier side. His style was all right. He didn’t have the best taste in clothing, but he matched, and that had to count for something. What really caught her attention was his scent. Philip was wearing a cologne she had never smelled before, and it was driving her insane. She had to cross and uncross her legs multiple times to stop her leaking core from soaking her panties.
She knew right away that he found her attractive. All men did. Lina was beautiful, charismatic, aggressive, and tenacious. Plus, she watched him ogle her leg when she stood above him just a moment ago. She could picture herself with her foot on his face. Or even the ball of her heel on his balls.
When she finished reading over Philip’s resume, she placed it down and interlocked her fingers again. “So, Mr. McAdams, your resume seems a bit sparse. I see that you recently graduated from UT Austin and passed the Texas Bar, but you have no legal experience other than that. What makes you think you are qualified to work at my law firm?” Lina asked with a tone that could make grown men cry and a stare that could turn one’s heart to stone. But for Philip, he was oddly turned on by her disposition.
After shaking off the arousal that went from his brain to his lower extremities, he answered, “Because Ms. Yoo, your reputation is unmatched. You were still a teenager when you graduated from Harvard Law, and you were also the Valedictorian with the highest GPA the law department had ever seen. You’re a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom, and your statistics are incredible.”
“I asked you why you believe you’re qualified to work here, Mr. McAdams, not to recite my autobiography that anyone can get off of our website.” Philip became stunned. Line stood up and slammed her hands on her desk, which resounded in a loud and powerful slap. When she did that, Philip pictured his ass cheeks as the desk. “If you think memorizing public information about me will help you gain points on this interview, then you can stop wasting both of our time. I need someone serious about the law and has the wits to outsmart the other party in an intense battle that could potentially save someone’s freedom. I need someone who can keep up with my caseload and assist me in making sure selfish assholes don’t try to circumvent the law and target the innocent.”
“I’m sorry, Ms. Yoo, I didn’t—”
“Get out, Mr. McAdams. You’ve wasted enough of my time. I suggest you take some time to reflect on what you really desire and who you want to be as an attorney before even attempting to apply at my firm again.”
