It took a long time before either of us spoke, before either of us said anything. We just stood there and stared at one another, both of us waiting for the other to speak first—even though I had asked her a question. I found it strange, strange that she seemed to want to avoid the topic, that she didn’t want to answer me. On the contrary, I was wrong. I was very wrong. And the longer I stared at her, the more it became obvious. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to answer me, but it was more that she didn’t know how to do it, what to say to me. Which only made the situation all the more strange and confusing to me. Why would she not know how to explain something that was being used to characterise her, to push her into a box?                 “I do not appreciate you mocking me, miss.” On
