As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew without a doubt that he had taken my words to heart, that he had interpreted them in a much deeper way than I had intended. The regret that I felt was instantaneous, but so was the knowledge that I wouldn’t be able to dig myself out of this hole any time soon—and that didn’t sit right with me.       “If that the ways that you feel, then I won’t bother you.”  Even though his features remained perfectly composed, even though his face and his voice didn’t give away a single thing, there was something about the way that he was looking at me that gave away his true feelings—that, as well as the strange feeling that I had swirling around in my stomach.  A sense of panic and distress wrapped around me, gripping at my heart like it was a stuffed animal
