Ella’s POV
The car rolled to a stop with a low growl of the engine. My palms were slick against the fabric of my dress as I felt like my chest had caved in and my breath shallow, I felt like after today, life may never be the same again for me.
. . . Because I knew where we were, I didn't need to be told, every whispered rumor, every hushed warning I had heard in my life painted this place in shadow. This was Alpha Cyril’s territory.
I whimpered, pressing myself against the car door when they ushered me out. I turned to my mother, a silent plea on my lips for her to see me, that I don't really want to do this, to be the sacrifice.
“No. No, please. Don’t do this. Please.” She finally looked at me again and just like before, her smile was gone. “You should be grateful, Ella,” she said softly. “You will be part of something greater now. A great purpose and a bond with a powerful Alpha. You have been given a great opportunity, one you could never earn on your own.” The chill in her voice held me down for what seemed like a long minute.
I shook my head violently. “But he. . . He is a monster. I don't want to marry someone who wants me for my body, mommy, please listen to me. . . Please”
My plea ended in a yelp as rough hands closed around my arms. The guards dragged me away from her, with their grip unyielding. My feet barely caught the ground as they dragged me toward the mansion’s doors with my parents following behind.
The doors swung open, and I was swallowed by the grand hall. The air inside was warmer but no less oppressive. Polished marble stretched beneath my feet, gleaming so brightly I could see the faint reflection of my frightened face. Tall columns framed the space, and the scent of cedar and, power clung to every breath I took.
At the far end of the hall, he was waiting.
He stood like the space belonged to him entirely, which, of course, it did. Broad shoulders filled the dark fabric of his shirt, the cut of it precise enough to hint at the strength beneath. His posture carried the weight of someone who didn’t need to prove anything.
I was hit by the full force of him.
He was. . . infuriatingly beautiful, in a way that made my stomach twist. Strong lines, sharp cheekbones, but beneath it was danger.
I can't will my eyes to stop looking at him, I'm completely stunned by his beauty. And yet I know the beauty can only be a trap, I wonder why monsters can be this beautiful
He didn’t speak to me at first. His eyes shifted to my parents. “I see you made the trip.”
The way he said it made it sound like an inconvenience for him.
My foster father gave a deep bow. “Alpha Cyril.”
Alpha Cyril’s gaze lingered on him a moment longer, and disdain passed across his face. “You didn’t need to come yourself,” he said dryly. “I imagine it was difficult to leave behind. . .whatever it is you do with your time.”
My foster father’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing. My mother’s smile was brittle.
Then his eyes returned to me. He looked at me with those eyes, sweeping over me once. No, he was not admiring me, he was assessing me, cold and quick, as though I were a horse he might buy. . . or put down.
“So,” he said to me, his voice deep and smooth, carrying easily in the hall. “This is what they have brought me.”
Heat burned my cheeks. This. He couldn’t even be bothered to use my name.
“I expected. . .” He let the pause hang deliberately, his gaze flicking to my dress and the way his guards still held me in place. “Well, something different. But I suppose an Omega is an Omega.”
The words stung. I could feel my pulse climbing, my fear and my pride clashing in my chest until one had to win.
I straightened my spine. “And I suppose an Alpha is an Alpha,” I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands.
His brows lifted slightly, as though he hadn’t expected me to have a sharp tongue. “Careful,” he murmured, stepping forward. Each stride brought him closer until I could feel the heat of his body, smell the faint mix of leather and pine clinging to him. “Most Omegas know better than to bite before they’re claimed. You’re here to elevate yourself, to tie yourself to power and prove your worth the only way an Omega can. I suggest you don't fail on your first try”
I hated the way his nearness made my breath hitch. Hated that my body betrayed me with the tiniest flicker of awareness.
“I’m not most Omegas,” I said quietly, refusing to step back.
For a moment, silence stretched between us, his eyes narrowed just slightly “Clearly,” he said at last, his tone dry. “And yet, here you are. Hand-delivered by your dear parents, who seem very eager to be rid of you.”
My stomach knotted. He was baiting me. I could hear it in the lazy, tone of his voice. My mother murmured behind me.
I stepped forward, the guards tensing slightly at my movement. “No. I am not here for you. I am here because they brought me,” I said, jerking my head toward my parents. “If you think I’m here to use you, you’re flattering yourself.”
One corner of his mouth curved “Careful Omega! You are in my territory” His eyes stab into me like daggers. My heart skips a beat when I see his hardened expression, flared nostrils, tense jaw, and his lips curled in displeasure.
I swallowed, my heart pounding, I bit my tongue not to speak further, so hard I even drew blood.
His head tilted slightly, his gaze sharpening. “And yet, you will still share my bed.”
The air between us thickened, heat curling in my stomach against my will. I hated him for saying it. Hated myself more for the way my skin prickled at the thought.
I forced my voice into a calm I didn’t feel. “I will share nothing you don’t take by force.”
His smile, when it came, was slow and dangerous. “Then we will see how long you can hold that line.”
I held his gaze, refusing to flinch, even as the people present shifted uneasily around us.
Finally, he stepped back, his eyes still locked on mine. “Take her to the east wing,” he ordered the guards. “She will have her own quarters. For now.”
The way he said for now sent an unsteady shiver through me.
As they led me away, my heart was still hammering from fear and something far more dangerous.
