CHAPTER 20: DEVON’S TRAINING INSIDE THE KINGDOM
Two mates. What does two mates mean? After what Helena shared to her, Devon was unable to locate her anymore. It was aid the seer herself was hiding from her sight. Had it have going to do with what she asked? It is just about mates. What’s wrong asking and bringing that topic to her?
Confused, she was at that state the moment that the door were pushed open. She knew who would it be. And she isn’t mistaken as she assumed for it to be Zachary. He could smell a faint scent of Tarik on him, but it was fading across as she knew that they had not made any contact apart from sealing a deal. Devon haven’t had no idea what business they had discuss. But to think of it, Tarik has been ordered by the King, then what was his rank in the Devonshire Kingdom, which she didn’t have the chance to ask before?
But those thoughts had been buried. Her eyes roamed itself when she felt Zachary’s heated gaze watching her.
“You looks beautiful.” He said.
That caught her off guard.
“W—what?” And instantly, Devon could feel the steam and her cheeks reddening at that sudden compliment.
It was just one word, but it was enough to make her chest beats, thumping loudly and wildly across her chest. Or was it directed towards the clothes she was currently clad into?
Devon powered her gaze to check on herself.
It was a white dress, which is tightly hugging her curves that she haven’t had any idea exist. It was sleeveless, exposing her arms, which are both pale, although she was a wolf, and wolves are commonly seen to be more tan than the rest of. Perhaps, her continuous hiding had keep her complexion that way. And on her feet, Devon paired the dress with the boots she had found inside the closet. It was if everything she had been place there. It fits her. Everything were her own size, cup and shape.
“Yeah, it is.” She said, pertaining to the dress.
She heard him chuckled.
“Silly.” Zachary softly laugh. “I am talking about you.”
“O—oh.” She lifted her head. “Thanks.”
“Are you not mostly getting compliments?” He asked. Perhaps, he had seen her reaction.
Rio shook her head.
“No.”
How can she get complimented, when she was just a rogue? Even Tarik, one of her mates, considering the fact, he had never told her that she is beautiful. He had never told her how much she matters to him, but he save her. Wasn’t that enough? But his rescue did not ensured the pain she had been grappled into. It engulf her, shattered her soul as it slapped on the face that he was just keeping her because if he hadn’t and something terrible happened to her, both knew how much it would pain greatly his wolf at the extent of raging, enrage and if she die, he will get weak. Much worst, he won’t be able to use the same strength he had before and which he relies on.
Whatever rank he may have on, it will be strip until he slowly become...human.
“Then, I will always compliment you.” Zachary said.
“Pardon?” Devon blinked her eyes.
“Are you always confuse at things?” He chuckled, but there is humour on his voice.
Devon pursed her lips.
“I think I am.” And she join his laughter. “But most of the time, when my mind is somewhere else or if I am being bothered by things I couldn’t help but he worried about.” She admitted.
Zachary keep his eyes on her.
“Had you always been honest?” He said out of nowhere.
“I am....?” Devon hesitated. “I don’t think so I am, I just speak my mind whenever I needed to.”
“And you just did again.” With that said, he walk closer and the moment he had gotten close, totally invading Devon’s personal space, Zachary wrapped his strong arms around her waist. “But I am not pertaining about the dress, I am referring to how beautiful you are.”
She was left tongue-tied. If she really have two mates, compared to Tarik, Zachary is more expressive. He was far from the cold and ruthless King that rumours had describe him to. People knew Zachary as somebody who seems different. They had this vivid image of the Vampire King in their head to be more like a leader who lead with an iron hand, or was he not just acting that way, because he is WITH Devon?
“You don’t need to, you know.” Abashed, she said meekly.
“But I wanted to.” He whispered, and Devon isn’t a fool not to know the admiration and passion lacing his voice.
It all felt surreal. Perhaps, it won’t be wrong if she left herself be drawn, before she cleared things right that it wasn’t just him, and she have a mate to confront way back in Devonshire Kingdom.
“Zach...” Devon trailed off.
Nevertheless, she couldn’t speak of the moment he opened up her soul. He kissed her the way he does before the first time he claimed her lips. There are butterflies exploding inside her stomach. The taste which relish as he explored and venture every nook and cranny of her mouth leave Devon totally intoxicated. He feels so warmth, and at the same time cold. The steam they shared, the passion all combined together tempted her, urging Devon to pulled him closer and that’s what she did.
It’s crazy how she barely knew him, but here she is, allowing Zachary to make her feel thing she had never felt before. Every pain she had grew accustomed with. The rejection she had always been familiar way back before the death of her parents. He did not remind her of despair, but a promise receding a tomorrow onslaught to keep her on his arms, secured without fearing another storm.
She hope she could keep that ought as his kisses bring her the euphoria she lost before.
“That’s...great.” It was Zachary who pulled himself first.
They were both breathless. They were running after their breathe, but it was exceptional, the feeling exquisite, and the sensation was beyond any words Devon could have explained. Beguiled, it was more than drugs, the felt of how smooth his lips was against her was addicting.
“Y—yeah...” She trailed off.
She wanted to continue, where did they star, but she knew if she did, there wouldn’t be an end of it. Her wolf was growling, howling for a claim, and she wouldn’t allowed his mark not until all the confusion and the questions she had in mind finally get a more clearer view. That’s the only thing that has been stopping Devon.
“So, I think that would be enough for us to go.” He being affront and uttered underneath his breathe the moment he finally composed his heart rate.
His curiosity had been perk ahead.
“To where?” Intrigued, Devon ask as she rested her head on his chest.
His heartbeat, the loud thump she could hear coming him felt like a music to her ears. It’s totally amazing how one person could be drawn to one particular man or a woman on their life no matter what would be the circumstances was. Unlike humans, their race only fall in love once. They will only be fated towards one vampire, their beloved, and one wolf, their mate. They are bounded through life. But that’d doesn’t assured that there wouldn’t ne tears, and heartbreaks as same with humans, rejection exist. But it won’t just give them ache, and pang because the pain and anguish would be more unbearable that it would be able to kill them.
It was the Moon Goddess law.
“To the training ground.” Zachary said.
And that is what exactly happened.
Zachary bring her to where the training ground was. Compared to the Devonshire Kingdom, it has equipment, they have silvers and metals. A lot more of what human commonly use. Back to her old pack, they only have wooden swords and arrow. They are trained using traditional methods and means of how they should fight against. It was because their mortal enemy were only rogues and not vampires. Urge to hunt, and rely on their inhuman strength, but warned to be wary of silver as it could harm them greatly.
“I didn’t know you have this.” He was beyond amazed.
“That’s not just what we have.” Zachary said before he gestured towards the other end.
This is what the traditional means Devon was talking about.
“You always use wooden weapons?” She blinked her eyes, surprised. “And there’s stake, isn’t it dangerous for most of you?”
Stake were the one often use to kill a vampire.
“It was, but that doesn’t we should fear it.” Zachary walk closer to touch it. “Sometimes our strength comes form what we are afraid of. It mould us. The horrid feeling which would allowed us to have courage, because in war, if we let it consumed us just because our enemy have something that could kill our race, and we let fear to take over dominion, then that would be our end. Even if it had not yet begins, we lose already.”
“Had I told you that I am admiring you as a King already?” She blurted out afterwards.
Zachary looks bold, but he is that kind of King whom his people needs exactly. Before the vampires lay scattered, they kill and hint for their needs and thrived for bloods, but the moment a reigning leader take over and put them on their place, the rampage stop. A peace had fallen. There no fear in the dark anymore. He made sure that his decree was obey, if not, Devon knew what punishment awaits for their mere disobedience.
Now, she can understand why a King needs to be both cruel and compassionate, but that doesn’t mean, they have only cruelty, yet they also use their knowledge to protect their people and made sure that they are intact. He rule to lead, and that’s how Devon see Zachary at that moment.
“Is that a compliment coming from my mate?” He chuckled before he walked to where a wooden sword lies.
“It is, because I surely did.” Devon uttered.
“Then let me trained you.” With that said, Zachary tossed the wooden sword to Devon, and she caught it with ease. “Since your species do not fancy silvers, I think we better settle on woods.”
“And what are you training me for?” She questioned him, and inspect the wooden weapon.
“You would need it when situation calls for it.” That was his only reply before he smirk. “Now, strike.”
“What do you mean—" But Devon haven’t had the time to react when Zachary charge at her.
Thanks to her reflexes, she manage to bring her sword to protect herself from his own wooden sword.
“Focus, mate.” He chuckled.
“You took me by surprise!” Devon said, her eyes widening on its own accord the moment he spin around, and aimed for her legs.
Devon made a summersault to avoid his attack. It happened fast, she haven’t prepared any trick yet, nor strategy, he just came moving more faster than before.
“In war, and in the real battle, nobody would gave you enough time to prepare.”
Devon quickly spun around, when she felt his hit breathe fanning across his ears. But as she does, Zachary was no longer there.
“But it was unfair, you are more strong than me!” She sharpened her senses to feel every movement around her.
But Devon wouldn’t deny...that it gave her excitement, both her and her wolf had been filled with an adrenaline rushing on her vein.
“It wasn’t about being strong, darling.” She could hear him, but she couldn’t tell nor pinpoint where she was. “It is about what you are going to do if toy face a much stronger opponent.”
With that said, something launched itself on her back right before Devon felt her waits being pulled to Zachary’s stoned chest.
“Checkmate.” He chuckled.
Devon pouted her lips.
“It was unfair!” She complain.
Zachary laughs.
“Don’t worry, I can protect you.” He chuckled before lowering his head to steal another kisses from her lips.
Devon smiled softly. Torn, but contented at the mate she have.
