Chapter Fifty

1768 Words

Zara’s POV ‘Are you there?’ a boy's voice calls out as I sit up, shivering in the six by six cell I’m in, the sound of dripping water echoing from somewhere to my right. The whole room is so dark I can barely make out the walls in the tiny space. ‘Hello? Are you there?’ the voice calls out again, more insistently. I hold out my hands, feeling along the wall as far as the chain around my neck allows me to until I find a small hole just big enough to fit two of my fingers in. ‘Hello?’ I call out, surprised by how rough my voice sounds, like I haven’t drunk anything in days. ‘Oh, you are still alive, thank you God!’ the little boy mutters as the clink of a chain sounds from the other side of the wall as he moves closer to me. ‘Though I shouldn’t be surprised’ he adds with a harsh chuckle
