Nothing happened.
She tried again, reaching for that place inside herself where her wolf lived. But something was blocking her. She couldn't access her shift at all.
Laura charged at her, moving impossibly fast.
Lyralei dove to the side, her heart hammering. "Come on," she muttered, trying again to shift. "Come on, come on—"
Still nothing.
She looked up to see Laura circling her, and suddenly understood. The satisfaction rolling off Laura in waves. It clicked.
This was Laura's dream. She could control what happened here. She could block Lyralei from shifting because in this place, Laura made the rules.
"You cheating b***h," Lyralei snarled.
Laura's wolf form seemed to grin, lips pulling back to show massive teeth.
Then she jumped again—and sprouted wings.
