Chapter 5

903 Words
Lilly POV The beeping of machines around me lulls me away from the darkness. Where am I? The lights are so bright and artificial. Where am I? Everything hurts, but the ache in my head is making it difficult to think and the brightness isn’t helping. I squint away, the movement jolting shooting pains all over my body. “Argh” I cry out, unable not to. “Andrew, get the nurse. Lilly huni, it’s alright. Your in the hospital sweet heart, your safe” “I take a breath, events flooding back to me. The crash, the stalker” I start to panic. The machines beeping increases. “Lilly, sweety, calm down, I promise your safe now” “How can I be?? He tried to kill me. He is still out there” I cry escapes me. “Maybe but you won’t be here” “What?” “Andrew and I have been talking and we have an idea to keep you safe. Lilly have you ever been to the mid-west?” “What??” “Listen sweetheart, that doesn’t matter right now. What I need you to do is rest, we are leaving your side and your safe. Close your eyes. The nurse is going to give you something to help with the pain, ok” I close my eyes, feeling worn out. Feeling the nurse injection something into my cannula, soft darkness consumes me again. …………………… Noises around me pull me to the surface again, voices in the room. “She’s unconscious, so no you can’t get her statement right now. If you had done your jobs in the first place we couldn’t be here” Sybil voice penetrated my mind. “Ma’am I know your upset but you need to calm down” Andrew, this child is telling me to calm down. I raised five boys, this is nothing close to irate. I am perfectly calm. I am concerned for this sweet girl and her safety. She has a stalker, one who has broken into her home and tampered with her brakes. You were not interested before, why are you now?” The room is quiet, the answer intrigues me so I’m waiting, staying still so they don’t know I’m awake. “.. .. .. ma’am I’m sorry, I was assigned this case to arrest Miss Drew for criminal damage caused when her car left the road..” “.. .. . “ I can hear Sybil opening and closing her mouth like a fish. How could they.. .. he is here to arrest me?! “You’re not serious!!!” Andrew bellows. “Obviously based on this information, I’m going to return to my Sargent and request a new investigation into the incidents. I am going to need you both and Miss Drew to make statements though” “Fine, take ours then, outside so she can rest. By the time we are finished, perhaps she will be awake and answer your questions” I hear the room door open and close, gradually my eyes open. Assessing the room as well as myself. I still have a headache but I can think a little better. My vision is fuzzy at the edges and I’m dizzy but it’s manageable. Everything aches, but considering my time effectively in a tumble dryer, that’s not a surprise. I wiggle my fingers and my toes, there’s a pull on my skin so I’m guessing there some injuries I can’t see. Breathing is not something I’m usually aware of but my chest movement feels restricted. Pain across my front makes me think it’s from hitting the steering wheel. Guess my airbags didn’t go off til after that. I wonder how long I have been asleep? Just then the door opens and the police officer walks in with Andrew and Sybil on his heels. “Good to see you conscious, Miss Drew. I’m sorry this happened to you, do you feel like you could take me through what happened?” That’s just what I do, from the first picture all the way until last night. Including the email with my police report reference number on it. After what feels like forever, I answer all his questions as best I can. He is disappointed that I don’t have any idea who this could be and that i am effectively all alone apart from Sybil and Andrew. “Do you have somewhere to stay where you’ll feel safer?” The officer asks just as he is leaving the room. Before I can answer, Andrew speaks up “She’ll be with us, contact the numbers you have for us if you need her” The officer nods, turns his back and leaves. “Don’t fret, we are going to go and make a call then we’ll be back. Get your head in the right space, we are taking you home, you are packing a bag and then we are taking you to the grey hound.” I open my mouth to interrupt but I’m silenced. “You need to be out of this city and somewhere safe, so that’s where we are sending you. Ok?” My eyes well up, unable to get words past the lump on my throat I simply nod. “Good girl, we’ll be right back” They leave the room and I’m left with my own thoughts. What has my life become.
