Christine's POV
I drive home. I am tired of the long operation. I don't believe my husband will be home early. I hate staying in that house. His parents are staying next door, and I do not like them coming around whenever they feel like it. I bought this house with my salary. I also bought a house next door for my in-laws. I thought they would be nicer to me. Mike and his parents spend all their money to try to climb the social ladder. They throw lavish parties for their friends, colleagues and superiors to gain favour. They want to impress the elite in town to become part of them and live high above their means. I get home, and I am surprised to see Mike's car standing in the driveway. I'm surprised that he is home so early today. I walk into the house, and Mike is waiting for me in the sitting room. Of course, his mother and father are there again. However, they are not alone. Next to Mike is the woman that I was thinking about. Emma is sitting next to Mike. I have a sinking feeling in my stomach as I look at everybody who looks at me when I walk in.
"What is going on? Why is Emma in our house?" I ask. Mike and I have been relatively happy until recently, when he started to work late. He became distant from me.
"That is no way to greet a guest, but I guess you and your type do not know the meaning of hospitality. Emma and Mike have something to tell you," Maureen, my mother-in-law, says.
"Go ahead, just tell me whatever you want to tell me," I say. I look at the bags standing next to Mike's chair. Are those my bags? Is Mike throwing me out of my own house? We have a prenup. He can not throw me out of my house! I bought this house and his parents’ house.
"Christine, you know that we have been together for a long time. You never gave me a child. You know that Emma is my first love. Well, she's back in my life and she's pregnant with my baby. I want a divorce. I hope that you are not going to be stubborn. I don't love you anymore. I want to be with Emma," Mike says. Every word of his stabs like a knife into my heart.
"She is pregnant with your baby. Well, I am happy for you. It is very ironic," I say. I know she cannot be pregnant with Mike's baby. We had tests done to see why we cannot get pregnant. However, Mike never saw the results because I didn't want him to see that he is the reason why we cannot have children. Mike is shooting blanks. I'm not going to tell him now. He can marry this woman and raise another man's child for the rest of his life. I am shocked. I am numb. I didn't want to believe that Mike was having an affair behind my back, but I knew he was deep down. I knew he was not coming home at night because he was with his first love.
"What is ironic about that? We are going to have our first grandchild, and I cannot wait. I hope it is a boy. He will be just as handsome as Mike," Maureen says.
"I am sure he will look just like Mike. Won't he, Emma?" I ask. Emma frowns as she looks at me. I can see that she looks guilty and cannot look me in the eye. She knows that it is not Mike's child, but she has to get a child for her illegitimate child. I have nothing against Emma. Although she is ruining my marriage, I always felt a little sorry for her because her parents died when she was young, and her uncle was the one who raised her. I don't want to be Emma, telling Professor Stevens that she is expecting an illegitimate child.
"All your things are packed. I am also giving you a hundred thousand dollars. I am sure it is enough for you. You can also keep the apartment we have in town. Please, do not make a scene, Christine," Mike says. I do not know if I should laugh or cry. Although everything is shattered inside of me, I'm not going to show these people that they have hurt me. I will keep my head high, and I will walk out of here with nothing because I don't need their money. I'm not going to cry. I am stronger than that. My father has told me that you never show anybody when they hurt you. You do not want them to feel they have any power over you in case they want to get back into your life and use you again.
"I am not going to make a scene, I know when I'm not wanted. However, I do not want your money, and you can keep the apartment. You forgot one thing! This is my house! I paid for it and the one next door! You are the ones who have to move. You and your parents," I say.
"Come on, Christine, don’t keep yourself high and mighty. You and Mike are married, and he deserves to get this house! We will not move out! You might have paid for the houses, but Mike had to look after you all these years! Mike and Emma will need this house for their children to grow up in, and since you cannot have children, the apartment is enough for you! Mike is being generous. Don't make things difficult for him," John, my father-in-law, says.
"I am not making anything difficult for him. I am making it easier for him. I will get my attorneys to start the divorce procedure. I will get this divorce over and done with as quickly as possible. I want my freedom back as quickly as possible. Mike never gave any of his money to me or the household. I paid for everything, even your food! Mike, if I were you, I would move out, or I will have all of you thrown out of my house! This one and the one next door belong to me. You all better start packing. I would also not count on that promotion you were hoping for. I will not count on becoming the head of the surgical department at Westview General," I say. I cannot help being a little bitter. I am not going to allow my father to give that position to Mike, and I will never give them the houses.
"Bahahaha! As if you have a say in it! Emma was the one who convinced her uncle to give Mike the position. You have no say. We will not move! We will get a court order if we have to and throw you out of the house!" Maureen laughs. I know Jonathan Stevens has a lot of say in my father's business, but he's only my father's silent partner. He has no say about who is appointed and who is not. I was the one arranging everything for Mike. I was the one who begged my father for seven years to give Mike that position. I take my bags and walk to my room. I will not sign those divorce papers, and I will have my attorneys pull up new ones. I do not want to sign away my houses.
“Where do you think you are going?” Maureen shouts.
“To my room in my house!” I shout. However, Maureen and Mike grab me and throw me out of my house with my bags!
