Chapter 5: Burn

1228 Words
Boom! A loud bang shook everyone around. Those who are already outside are rushing inside their cars, while us… “Ahhh!” “Goodness!” “What the hell?!” People screamed as a bomb behind us exploded. Too bad I chose the seat on the front row. I didn’t completely make it out on time. My back hurts so bad. I guess it got caught from the explosion. I am laying on the cold cement just outside the door. I couldn’t move my body. It felt numb brought about the excruciating pain at my back.  Great! I don’t have a phone to call Alexis. Maybe, I should consider myself lucky as I look at the people caught inside the room. They’re more critical than I. This place looks elegant earlier, but now…it looks like a burning hell. “Herena!” Atlas! I heard someone called out my name. Or am I hallucinating? “Herena!” I heard it again. “Hey!” I felt a hand lifted my chin. “It’s me darling.” I knew it was Alexis. Who would look after me if not him? I felt really bad on how the Dexigrous choose to save themselves alone when a lot of people was there. “Oh s**t! You’re back.” I heard my cousin cussed as he checks my body. I saw him bringing a pen and converted it into a knife. Laghberg technology. “Stay still…” Oh what no! I felt him cut the fabric covering my back. “Ouch!” I cried as he strips the fabric off. Fortunately, it was a satin one. I didn’t have to go through so much pain in the removal of the thing. Alexis also did it in a matter of second that’s why. “Hold on your remaining clothes or else…” He reminded me before scooping me off the ground and puts me on his shoulder with my face facing his back. He is holding at my legs. I didn’t have the energy to argue any further; and in my state, I should really be thankful of him. I saw people looking at me. Gosh! Having my butt in the air is embarrassing right? “Alexis…” “Hmm…” I heard him replied as we approach his white car. His car was way out of the black motif. “Does the burn in my back look horrible?” Maybe that’s why they are looking at me because my back looks gross. He chuckled and opened the passenger seat before gently landing me on the seat. “Super! The burn is engrossing…” He laughed lightly before turning to the other side; opened the door; and started the engine. “Dr. Alipio is already waiting in the house to check on you.” Wait. Now that I realize it… “Alexis how did you know?” I asked curiously. I thought he has a meeting to attend in the nearby state. “I should be the one asking. Where’s your phone?” He fired back. “I lost it.” I don’t know too. “Answer me. How did you know what happened?” It couldn’t possibly by chance that he suddenly thinks of visiting me there. “The Laghberg called. They planted a bomb under the chair reserve for the Dexigrous brothers.” Horrible! That new mafia boss is leading the organization evilly. If his father was alive, I am positive that he wouldn’t do it. Or if he did want to kill them, he will not do it in public where a lot of people can be put in danger. “I called you a lot of times but ain’t receiving any answer. I couldn’t help but leave the meeting because I’m very worried of you.” Aw. I wouldn’t wish more about my cousin. He is so nice to me. He should be! Kinship responsibility… “Thank you,” I said and attempted to hug him but stop because the fabric are slipping off with my arms extended. “Save that for later.” He chuckled. I close my eye to sleep. Not long after when I look outside, we are already home. “Are you feeling better?” He asked me with concern eyes. “Yeah. I think I can walk from here.” I assured as I felt like my body is relieved from the tension and pressure of getting out earlier. Maybe it wasn’t my burn that makes me feel weak earlier but my negative reaction to the pressure. “Good morning Ms. Devaraux.” Dr. Alipio greeted me before greeting Alexis. “I’ve been a family doctor since you were a kid. Come on. Take a seat. Let me check on your back. Alexis texted me earlier about your condition.” She said. I sat on the couch and turn sideward for her to see my burn clearly. “I must say you got really lucky darling, the burn is mild. We can heal this within a week.” She explains. I am very glad it wasn’t that severe. “Ouch!” I reacted upon feeling a sting on my back. “Don’t worry sweetie…I’m disinfecting it.” Go ahead. *** Calix POv I couldn’t help thinking about what I just saw earlier. I extended my arms to reach for my drink. After all these years… My phone rang when the bidding on the last item starts. It was our Mafia Intel. I answered it immediately. “Sir. Kindly leave the area now. There’s a sensitive bomb planted on you seat. This information was verified by the mafia. Sir kindly leave now.” The intel warned us. I ended the call and check for the bomb myself. They were right. Devon tried to diffuse it as I start bidding for the Gun of Yakuza. That will be a big asset for our Mafia in developing new weapon that can break through the hardest metal element on earth. Too bad. The woman in front is as determined as I am. “Bro…I don’t think this bomb can be diffuse. The system is quite vague with complicated wirings. I can’t!” He raises his voice. “How much time do we have?” Dexigrous mafia badly needs the item on the bid. “20 seconds…” Lives are more valuable than any thing. “Get out!” I ordered them to leave as I followed. I don’t have to tell everyone as the crowd feels the tension too. They are mafia bosses and members to start with. As we are boarding our cars, we heard the explosion. I decided to stay at the scene to observe. What Mafia family sent the least number of delegates in the event? They were the one responsible for the bomb. I checked their faces. As a Mafia son, I am thought on the different faces of mafia bosses, reapers, spies , and intel. My method of finding the mastermind would be effective. But my inspection suddenly froze as I saw a woman lying on the entrance. She was the same woman earlier in the front seat. I must admit I am impressed as she manages to make it out alive when she’s far from the exit. Unfortunately, her back was caught by the fire. I don’t know but, she looks familiar even with a mask on. I don’t have to think more when someone shouted a name I’ve known years ago. “Herena!” The man shouted. Am I right to what I just heard? “Herena!” I heard it clearly. What if that woman happens to be the girl I loved and let go eight years ago? Does it mean, she is now a part of the mafia world? Not our mafia but our enemy’s mafia groups…
