Everett
I am still in bed. I didn’t get home until five this morning. I went to Tara’s place after we left the party. I didn’t want to stay over; it isn’t how it works. I have been awake for an hour after only sleeping for four. I will move when I can be bothered.
I reach for my cell and open the conversation on my texts with Aubrey. I wonder if she is awake. I know she left early because of me. She wasn’t tired. Yes, she had a lot to drink, but not enough where she had to leave. She wanted to get away from me.
Good morning, beautiful. Are you awake? Xx
I don’t know if she will text me back or not. It would be better for her if she did. If not, I will call or show up at her door. I smirk when a reply comes through.
Good morning. Yes, I have been awake for a while.
Did you sleep well? X
Yes.
Is this her way of trying to end the conversation by using one-word replies? If so, it isn’t going to work. She should know better than that by now.
What are you doing? Xx
I’m just heading out.
Is she, though? Or is it another tactic to avoid me?
Anywhere exciting? Xx
For coffee and pancakes.
Is she going for breakfast alone, or is she meeting with someone? Rather than texting back, I video call her. I am curious to see if she’ll answer or reject my call. After ringing for a minute, I am about to hang up, but she finally answers. She doesn’t look amused.
“Can I help you? I told you I am going out.” She sighs.
“With who?”
Aubrey rolls her eyes at me. “I have a hot date.”
Her voice drips with sarcasm.
“It can’t be that hot if your date is breakfast,” I reply, playing along.
“What do you want, Everett?”
I smirk, “I thought I was clear about what I wanted?”
Aubrey screws up her face and shakes her head. My response doesn’t amuse her.
“I will hang up if you don’t stop.”
I chuckle, “Fine. Are you going for breakfast alone?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want some company?”
“Would it matter if I said no? Knowing you, you will probably find out where I am by doing something stalkerish like tracking my cell.” She groans.
She is right. If I wanted to, I could track her phone. I wouldn’t, though. That is too stalkerish, even for me.
“I could, but I won’t. Text me your location. I will meet you there in about half an hour. You don’t, I will just stop by later.” I reply confidently and hang up.
I keep my eye on my screen. She will send me a text about where to meet because she doesn’t want me to show up later. A moment later, she texts me with her location.
I climb out of bed and quickly get ready. I showered when I came home from Tara’s place. I head out to my car and get on my way. It shouldn’t take too long to arrive.
I pull into a parking space and head inside. I glance around and spot her. Aubrey is sitting by one of the windows. She has a coffee and lost in a book. She looks cute in her casual outfit, black combat pants and a white tee. Her hair was in a side braid.
I smile and approach the table. She seems relaxed. It may change when she sees me.
“Hey, pretty girl.” I greet.
Aubrey rolls her eyes. I laugh at her displeasure. Aubrey looks up at me with a small smile.
“Hello.”
“What, I don’t even get a hello hug?”
“No, sit down or go away.”
Why does she insist on pretending she doesn’t want me around? I nod and sit across from her.
Aubrey sets her book down. I take a peek at the cover. There is a shirtless guy with a tie around his neck and a woman in front of him in a white dress shirt, only a couple of buttons fastened. It must be one of those steamy books she is reading. I find it interesting. I didn’t think it would be her thing. I don’t comment on it.
“How was the rest of the night?” she asks.
“It was a good night. Tara and I left at one. Everyone was still there.”
I was too horny to stay any longer. If we didn’t leave, I would have f****d Tara, someone in the house. My brother would have been pissed if I did.
“As long as Hugo had a good night,” she smiles.
“He did. Did you leave early because of me?”
“Should we order? I am hungry.” She asks, avoiding the question.
By doing that, she gave me her answer.
“Sure.” I smile.
I don’t want to push. If I do, she will leave. She smiles and nods. We look at the menu. We chose pancakes and place our order.
I focus my attention back on her. She looks at me. I stare back, not saying a word. I divert my eyes down to her lips and back up. I slowly lick my lips. She mirrors my actions.
I see her throat move as she swallows hard. I wiggle my brows and smirk. Her cheeks turn red, and she quickly breaks eye contact. She couldn’t handle it with me any longer—one of the many signs she is attracted to me.
“What is the matter, sweetness? Am I causing thoughts you don’t want in your head?”
Aubrey opens her mouth but changes her mind and closes it. She is worried she’ll say the wrong thing or too much.
I rest back on the chair and cross my arms over my chest. I smirk over at her, “I will take that as a yes.”
“We’ve been through this multiple times. It doesn’t matter either way. I refuse to get involved with you in any way,” she states firmly.
It is my turn to roll my eyes. “Maybe you should stop worrying about other people and what they want. You should focus on what you want.”
Aubrey sighs, “No. I made a promise, and I keep my promises. You are trouble. I am not looking for any trouble. I have had enough of that in my life.”
I sit forward and reach my hand-over, placing it over hers. “But I am the good type of trouble, gorgeous. I could take your mind off things. It can be our naughty little secret.”
It would be hot as f**k. It’s not like I am asking her to have a relationship. It would only be s*x—something which would do her a world of good and help her be less tense.
“Drop it, Everett.” She warns and yanks her hand away from me.
I hold my hands up. “Fine. I will for now.”
She sighs and turns to look out of the window.
“Aubrey, eyes on me,” I demand.
She shudders, and a soft whimper escapes from her lips. It takes a second, but she does as I tell her.
“Good girl.” I praise.
She sinks her lips into her lower lip and becomes flushed once again.
“Why are you so eager to have me?” she asks in a nervous whisper.
“Because I want you. You are beautiful. A mix of sweet and feisty. I think we could have a lot of fun together.”
“You don’t even know me.” She sighs.
“We could get to know one another. If Hugo and Erica were not in the picture, would you be so quick to reject me?”
“I don’t know.” She whispers.
She doesn’t sound convincing.
“Answer me, honestly, Aubrey. If we met in a different way, would you be interested?”
Aubrey runs her fingers through her hair. “Yes. Everett, there is more to it than just because of Hugo and Erica. You have no idea what I have been through.”
I can hear the sadness in her voice. Hugo mentioned she had been through a lot but didn’t go into too much detail.
“Tell me then,” I say softly.
She shakes her head, “No. I don’t know you well enough to tell me. Please drop it.” She whimpers.
Whatever it is, it must have been pretty bad. I can see her hands shaking. I take her hand in mine to stop it from shaking.
“I am sorry. I will drop it.” I promise.
I don’t want to upset her. I don’t like talking about my past and demons, either.
“Thank you.” She says softly.
The conversation ends there because our food arrives. Aubrey looks grateful. I won’t force her to tell me. It isn’t my place. I am not looking to get personal in any way.
