CHAPTER 13

1614 Words
CASSIAN’S SILVER POISON STRUCK AGAIN, sudden and merciless. He was enduring alone in his room, clawing the floor, growling in pain, and howling to end his suffering. His moon-wolf sigil tattoo glowed like it was helping him ease the pain, but it didn’t. The faint metallic scent mingled into the air, and Noah could see the Alpha’s breath growing shallower by the second. Panic clawed at him. Beta Noah was pacing back and forth in the hallway, in front of Alpha Cassian’s closed door, then his eyes settled on the Luna’s closed room. He took a deep breath and walked towards the Luna’s room. Noah knocked on the door. “Luna,” he called softly but urgently, “I know that you have suffered a lot, but you’re the only one who can help me right now.” No answer from the Luna. The silence pressed heavy between them, so Noah tried again, his voice cracking with desperation. “Can you help Alpha Cassian?” From inside, Seris looked through the door. “What happened to him?” “He’s dying.” Seris stood, but hesitated. “He was outside the door earlier, talking. There were no signs he was dying.” Noah’s tone dropped to a grim whisper. “Luna, he was poisoned. And every time it strikes, it was killing him. He was in pain.” There were no answers. Noah waited. Seconds. Minutes. But no one came out of the door. The Luna didn’t step out of her room. Noah sighed, bowing his head in disappointment. He stepped back and was ready to leave when the door opened. “Where is Cassian?” Seris asked. Noah was surprised. “Luna?” “My name is Seris, not Luna,” Seris corrected. “Lead me to him.” Noah immediately guided Seris to Alpha Cassian’s room. After Noah opened the door, he stepped aside and let the Luna step in. For some reason, Seris's heart sank seeing Cassian’s state. He was lying on the bed, sweating and breathing heavily. The air was heavy with the scent of pain and suffocation. “Cassian…” Cassian looked in her direction. His eyes widened. “You shouldn’t be here,” he rasped, forcing his voice into something resembling authority. “Leave.” Every instinct told her to turn around, to keep the walls she had built around herself intact. But watching Cassian like this, trembling, in pain and suffering… something inside her refused to walk away. And she felt like someone was gripping her heart. She looked at Noah. “Close the door,” then, without another word, she crossed the room and sank to the edge of his bed. “Seris, go out.” ‘Cassian, she’s the only one who can stop our pain,’ Fraizer muttered. Cassian growled. Seris should have been scared seeing Cassian in this state—his canines grew, his ash-gray was gleaming, and his claws extended. But she remembered, she was like Cassian too—a werewolf. Whatever might have happened, she will be the same as Cassian. She didn’t know what to do—to make Cassian feel better, but her hand moved on its own, like her hand knew what needed to be done. Her fingers hovered for a moment before she touched his hand—burning hot yet trembling as if from cold. She held Cassian’s hand firmly, and for a moment, she felt the poison running in his veins. It was fast, as if it were eating his blood. She didn’t know how it happened, but it felt like it registered to her naturally that there was poison in Cassian’s blood. It was pulsing, burning, and fast. Cassian tried to pull away at first, but the fight drained his strength. His grip tightened just slightly, as if her touch was the only thing tethering him to the world, which it really was. Seris closed her eyes. At that moment, Cassian’s eyes fluttered half-open, and he looked at Seris. “Seris…” his voice was low, almost pleading, in pain. “I never wanted you to see me like this.” For an unknown reason, Seris’s chest ached at the raw honesty in Cassian’s tone—she opened her eyes—and before she could answer, words spilled from him in a whisper. “They… they think I’m unkillable,” his breath hitched. “But every day, I wonder if I’ll wake up or the silver poison finally wins.” Seris felt the fear in Cassian’s voice. A tone of fear that she had never heard before. She stared at Cassian, whose eyes were now closed. His uneven breathing is now slowly turning calm. His chest rose and fell evenly, as if he wasn’t in pain. Seris looked at their entwined hands. Aside from the poison in Cassian’s blood, she could feel something stirring inside her. And suddenly, a flash of memory and whisper from the past. “One day, you will find someone you can trust with everything. He will be your mate, and when that day comes, your bond will awaken, and your power will start to manifest. Your bond will awaken everything that has fallen asleep for a long time.” Seris touched her head. She was confused about who owned that voice speaking to her mind like that. But subconsciously, her eyes drifted to Cassian, who was now sleeping. Her heart beats fast. Each thud echoes in her own. And a thought came unwelcome. Is it him? She pushed it away, focusing harder on the flow of energy, but the more she tried to resist the thought, the stronger it became. Meanwhile, outside the closed door, Noah leaned against the wall, arms folded. “How’s Alpha Cassian?” Finnley asked, keeping his voice low as his gaze flicked to the closed door. “He’s stable now,” Noah replied with a smile that tugged at the corner of his lips. “Luna was inside with him.” Finnley’s brows rose. “She finally came out?” Noah nodded once, almost in disbelief himself. “Yeah. And she’s not leaving his side.” “Can she alleviate the pain in Alpha Cassian?” Finnley asked, wanting to see what was happening inside. “Yeah, she can.” Finnley didn’t believe it. “How so?” Noah sighed and opened the door. “See it yourself.” Finnley peeked inside and paused when he saw Alpha Cassian lying on the bed, sleeping. While Seris was sitting on the bed on his side, holding Alpha Cassian’s hand, and didn’t let go. “See?” Finnley nodded. “But it seems that Luna was not in a good state.” Noah quickly turned to look inside. He entered the room without saying a word. “Luna?” The Luna didn’t reply. And then suddenly, she fell on Alpha Cassian’s chest. “Luna!” Noah was worried and looked at Finnley. “Call Elena.” Finnley nodded and immediately called Elena to check on the Luna. After a few minutes, Elena arrived. Noah and Finnley stayed and watched Elena. “You two, can you go out? I felt like you didn’t trust me at all.” Noah and Finnley exchanged looks before both stepped out of the room. Elena could only shake her head. “So protective,” she muttered, and continued checking the Luna. “If someone finds out that the Alpha of the Rogue Ashcrest Pack is not as powerful as they thought, we won’t be as peaceful as it is now. No one dared to attack us because it was known by all that Alpha Cassian was ruthless and powerful,” Noah said, looking at the tall window at the end of the hall. Finnley folded his arms and leaned against the hall. “You’re right.” Then he sighed. “I wonder what would have happened if Alpha Cassian hadn’t saved me. I might already be dead now.” “We all are. Everyone in the pack was saved by Alpha Cassian. He might be ruthless, as the rumors say, but he was a good Alpha. He has a good heart.” Finnley smiled. A few minutes later… Elena stepped out of the room. “Elena, how’s the Luna?” Noah asked. Elena showed a surprised expression. “You’re not going to ask about your Alpha?” she asked. “How’s Alpha?” Finnley asked and smiled innocently. Noah chuckled and tapped Finnley’s arms. Elena ignored Noah and Finnley’s teasing approach. “The Luna’s fine,” she said. “Her healing power is still manifesting. It hasn’t fully awakened yet. That’s why she passed out.” “And the Alpha?” Finnley pressed. Elena’s gaze softened. “Naturally, because they are mates, only Seris can heal him. But even she can’t remove the poison completely. She can only dull the pain, ease his suffering… but the silver remains.” “So, is there no chance to cure the silver poison on Alpha Cassian?” Noah asked. Elena sighed. “I can’t answer you right now, Noah. But we have to prepare,” she said. “By the way, prepare a soft breakfast for the Luna for tomorrow. She hadn’t eaten for days. It’s not good to eat solid food.” “I’ll tell Isla to prepare for it,” Noah said. Elena nodded and left. “I’ll go for patrol.” Finnley turned and left. Noah was left outside Alpha Cassian’s room, head down and shoulders slumped. He turned and looked inside. Alpha Cassian and his mate were lying on the bed, looking peacefully, but behind their peaceful faces lay suffering and pain.
