‘Mae never had any children,’ I mutter, my gaze dropping to my lap as I clasp my hands together tightly. ‘she used to say that God hadn’t blessed her with her own babies, so he’d blessed her with the ability to help and feed others instead. That’s why she took Robyn and I in, she saw we needed help and that’s the kind of woman she was, she had to offer her hand where she could.
I worked with Mae for four months, and everything was going really well, I had steady hours, Robyn was safe and the tips I made from the regulars started to grow into savings.
