Chapter 10 Threat

724 Words
Anna struggled to keep her expression steady, but when Ethan wasn't looking, she shot a deadly glare at Jasmine. Tch. Anna let out a mocking laugh. Seriously? That little jab was enough to rattle you? "Anna, don't go too far!" Ethan gritted his teeth, sounding like he was about to explode. "Too far?" Anna chuckled, her voice laced with disbelief. Did this guy forget everything he'd done to her? After everything he put her through, he still had the nerve to act like he was the victim? Ethan looked like he wanted to say something, but Jasmine reached out and stopped him. "Ethan, leave us for a minute. I need to speak with Miss Fitzpatrick alone." "Alright. Call me if anything happens." Even now, Ethan carried around a weird sense of guilt toward Jasmine, so he pretty much did whatever she said. "Mm," Jasmine murmured as she gently kissed the back of his hand, her smile sweet and innocent. Anna just stood there, watching them coldly. If she had her way, she wouldn't let either of them walk away clean. "Don't look at me like that. Whatever I did, you probably deserved it anyway." As soon as Ethan closed the door, Jasmine's tone flipped, her eyes cold as ice. "Besides, Ethan made every single decision. If you still meant even a little bit to him, he wouldn't have treated you like this." Without Ethan around, Jasmine didn't bother keeping up the nice-girl act. "You might as well just sign the papers. It's easier for everyone," she added, pretending it was all for Anna's own good. Anna looked out the window, refusing to even acknowledge her. "I heard your grandma's still hooked up to expensive treatment at the hospital?" Jasmine leaned in, her voice sinking low. Anna stiffened up immediately. "Now, imagine what would happen if, one day, those pricey meds just ran out…" Jasmine's voice dripped with threat. Anna's face turned pale in an instant, her voice barely there. "What… what are you trying to do?" "I want you to sign the divorce papers," Jasmine pointed at the document sitting on the bed. "Otherwise, I can't guarantee the hospital won't have a little… mix-up." Jasmine's eyes gleamed with something vicious. "Or maybe… someone just doesn't wake up one day. ICU patients passing away? No one would even question it." She wasn't bluffing—she had already thought it all through. With the most poisonous words dressed up in a sweet smile, Jasmine said it all like she was talking about the weather. And Ethan? He treated her like she was some kind of angel. Anna's knuckles turned white from clenching her fists, loosening and tightening again and again. "Fine. I'll sign." "But how do I know you'll actually keep your word?" she asked. There was no chance she believed a word Jasmine said. Jasmine tilted her head, confident. "Because I'm going to be the next Mrs. Donovan." Anna let out a bitter laugh. "Right. I'd love to see Ethan still back you up after he finds out what you're really like." "What's that supposed to mean?" Jasmine's smile slipped a bit. Anna didn't look at her. She slowly forced herself up from the bed, holding onto her stomach as she made her way to the window. She reached behind a flowerpot and pulled out a phone, turning to Jasmine with a sarcastic smile. After everything Jasmine had done, Anna wasn't dumb enough to keep her guard down. She stared at the video playing on her screen, where Jasmine's twisted expression was captured perfectly. Anna laughed again, this time for real. The second Jasmine saw the phone, a wave of panic hit her like a truck. All that graceful sweetness flew right out the window as she bolted toward Anna. If Ethan saw that video… Jasmine didn't even want to think about what'd happen next. She lunged to take it, and although Anna had been ready, she was still too weak to fight back properly. This might be her only shot at exposing Jasmine's true face—no way was she letting that phone go. Jasmine smacked it out of her hand. Anna tried to grab it, and the next thing she knew, she was pushed hard. A heavy thud echoed through the room—that was the sound of Anna crashing to the floor.
