The Cruel Truth
In Ravenwood, southeastern New York State,
With the sound of "Click".
The warm, yellow light illuminates the entire room. The man's gaze lingers by the window, following a chain to the woman lying in a heap on the ground.
The woman is dressed in a pristine white wedding gown, barely breathing, collapsed on the floor.
The man's eyes flickered with uncertainty. For the past seven days, he has come here regularly, hoping the woman would agree to his terms.
But he never expected that the usually haughty and willful heiress would be so stubborn.
"Victoria, seriously, I'll let you go as soon as you sign the agreement."
The man's voice remains pleasant. The woman on the ground slowly opens her eyes, her fingers trembling slightly as she struggles to lift herself up to look at him. Her usually delicate features are marred by smudged makeup and dehydration, leaving her looking utterly exhausted.
"You've already killed my grandfather, and my uncles have been framed and imprisoned by you. Now you're saying you'll let me go?" She looks mockingly at the chain around her ankle.
Her once pristine, porcelain feet are now raw and bleeding from the chain's abrasion, and her once holy wedding gown is stained red with blood at the hem. She shakily stands up and slowly approaches the man.
"Do you know how much I hate you and Sofia?"
The chain restricts her from getting closer to the man. She stops, her body swaying unsteadily. "Aren't you keeping me here for the shares of Valentini Conglomerate in my possession and the heart that Sofia wants?"
Her life has been truly pitiful. Enzo Moretti, whom she thought was her biological father, turned out to be her stepfather. What's more despicable is that he pushed her, his daughter of twenty years, into the abyss for the future of his biological daughter, Sofia Moretti.
After her mother's death, Enzo married Sofia's mother and adopted Sofia, making her the heiress. He then conspired with outsiders to drug her into unconsciousness at the age of eighteen and spend a night with a gigolo.
He also had Francesca Romano, who had always been bribed with money, bring Antonio Russo to witness her decadent lifestyle. Antonio was the boy she had pursued for seven years. He never liked her, but because Valentini Conglomerate had a Mafia background, and she was Don's favorite granddaughter, he tolerated her. However, after this incident, his disdain for her grew.
Antonio fell in love with Sofia at first sight. Enzo, to facilitate his daughter's marriage and climb the social ladder by associating with the Russo family, went so far as to use her wedding to murder her grandfather, Alessandro Valentini, and frame her two uncles for attempted murder, who are now also in prison.
Yet, the reason she's still alive is that her grandfather, in an effort to protect her, transferred all his shares and her mother's shares to her name.
Antonio wants to obtain this immense fortune, but he must have her sign the agreement personally. Otherwise, the fortune will be donated.
Sofia needs her even more because the man she has always admired is suffering from an incurable disease, and her blood happens to be the key to controlling his illness. So, she deceived Antonio into believing she had a heart condition. Antonio has been accommodating her every request, waiting for her to sign the agreement so she can be rushed into surgery.
Antonio looks at her, his thoughts unreadable, and he sighs deeply. "I've never liked you. The wedding was to fulfill your dream. Isn't that enough?"
Victoria laughs insanely, "You're saying you fulfilled my dream? You killed my grandfather! You ruined my uncles! You caused the Valentini Conglomerate to fall apart! Now you're telling me, after all this, I should be content?"
She lunges at him like a madwoman, almost scratching his face with her nails. Unfortunately, the chain on her feet restrains her, and she crashes to the ground with a heavy thud.
The pain shoots from the depths of her bones to every joint. Antonio stands over her, motionless.
"Sofia is the love of my life. I can't stand to see her suffer. If you really love me, please save her."
Victoria lies on the ground, laughing. "Only now do I realize how perfect you and Sofia are for each other, both willing to do anything for your goals."
"Antonio, let me talk to Victoria."
The sudden voice from the doorway causes both of them to look over simultaneously.
Sofia, dressed in a white dress with shoulder-length hair, approaches them gently and stops beside Antonio. Her delicate, boneless hand softly grasps the corner of the man's suit. "Antonio, may I?"
Antonio's eyes were filled with tenderness. "Alright, whatever you wish. But your health is poor. I'm afraid she might upset you."
Sofia smiled slightly, speaking considerately, "I believe Victoria wouldn't be so unreasonable. She loves you so much, she would do anything for you."
Antonio had shown no concern for Victoria's well-being. Everything Sofia says is just to make the man accept everything as a matter of course.
"Okay, then you two talk. I'll go downstairs and pour you a glass of juice." Antonio strokes her cheek, tenderly tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Thank you, Antonio."
Victoria almost vomits as she watches their affectionate display. She always knew Antonio loved Sofia, but she didn't realize it was so sycophantic.
As Antonio descends the stairs, Sofia turns around, her face now adorned with a proud and contemptuous expression.
"How does it feel? The man you've loved for seven years now jumps at my every word."
Victoria looks at the woman in front of her, feeling genuinely sick. Sofia pulls out a chair and sits down, throwing a prepared folder at her. "Your cousin Matteo is still in my hands. He's always been kind to you; you wouldn't ignore his life and death, would you?"
"Matteo!" So that's why Matteo didn't attend the wedding seven days ago – he was captured by Sofia!
"Why are you so cruel? Do you really want to see my family destroyed?" Victoria couldn't understand what grudge Sofia could possibly hold against her to drive her to such madness.
Sofia's eyes turned fierce.
"Hmph. Seeing your family destroyed isn't enough, Victoria. You were born at a height that many can only dream of, while I, because of your existence, have been living in the shadows since birth."
"Enzo abandoned my mother and me, who was just born, to marry your mother. I've known about you all my life, constantly dreaming of taking your place!"
Victoria was filled with rage. "Then you should hate Enzo! Why harm the Valentini Conglomerate? If Enzo hadn't tried so hard to climb the social ladder, my mother would never have noticed him!"
"Yes, which is why Enzo is now rotting in prison, thanks to me," Sofia says nonchalantly, brushing over the topic.
Victoria is momentarily speechless, and Sofia laughs again. "I know he's selfish and self-serving, after all, his blood runs in my veins. But the suffering he caused me? I had to repay that. So, he'll spend the rest of his life rotting in prison."
"You're truly venomous!" Victoria never imagined that Sofia could be so harsh, even to her own father. Now, as the prey, she has no power to fight back.
Now, the Valentini Conglomerate only has her cousin left. She can't let anything happen to her dear cousin Matteo...
"Is it true that if I give up my shares, my cousin will be safe?"
Seeing her yield, Sofia nodded. "It's no use to me if he's dead. Exchanging his life for your shares is a fair deal for me."
Victoria closes her eyes, as if weighing her options several times in her mind. Finally, she opens the document and signs her name on the top page, then throws it back at Sofia.
Sofia immediately picks up the folder, sees the signature, and laughs triumphantly. "Wonderful! From now on, I can take your place!"
Victoria, not thinking much and assuming she only wanted the fortune, asks, "Can you release my cousin now?"
Sofia closes the folder, covering her mouth with a smirk. "Victoria, you really haven't changed. You're still so naive."
Victoria sensed something amiss. "You're going back on your word!"
Sofia shook her head. "It's just too bad that Matteo Greco was in a car accident on your wedding day. He didn't survive the night."
Thunder rumbles outside, and Victoria feels as if the lightning has struck her, causing her blood to freeze in her veins.
Sofia squats down, leveling her gaze at Victoria. "I told you, didn't I, Victoria? Always read carefully before signing any agreement. Thank you for agreeing to donate your body to a scientific institution for organ transplants."
"What!?"
"You mean that document just now..." Victoria stared at the file in Sofia's hand, feeling numb.
"Yes, you chose to commit suicide, unable to bear the loss of your loved ones, and transferred all your shares to Antonio. You also dedicated your body to a scientific institution for organ transplants." Sofia looked at her with satisfaction.
Slowly, she laughs again. "With your blood and all your organs in me, we'll be tied together forever, never to part."
Her eyes filled with longing, and after a glance at Victoria, she walked proudly towards the door.
Thunder rumbles outside, and a downpour starts instantly.
Victoria looked out the window at the heavy rain, her eyes devoid of any desire to live. She stands up from the ground, taking step after step to pull the chain to its fullest extent.
Only when the chain reaches its limit does she stop, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Grandfather, Cousin Matteo, Victoria is coming to join you. It's all because of my naivety that I've brought this upon everyone. I'm sorry, so sorry."
In despair, she closes her eyes and charges towards the wall. At this moment, a shadow leaps in through the window. As the woman is about to collide with the wall, the man rushes forward, opening his arms to embrace her.
Due to the momentum, his back slams against the wall with a thud.
Yet, the man only lets out a muffled grunt, showing no other reaction.
Victoria feels something soft blocking her, and when she opens her eyes, she sees a strange, handsome man in a black suit.
